Mercury sable 1996 changed fuel filter had brown gas in it did this ruin fuel pump. Can hear pump when trying to start car

Most likely the fuel pump is ok, but there is likely air in the fuel line that you need to bleed off under the hood.

It is possible that the fuel pump went bad, and the way to know is to check the fuel pressure (same place you bleed it under the hood). The fuel pump is in the tank, so it's a real pain to change.

Changed fuel pump but it wont start

Check for spark, if spark then spray start fluid into throttle body, if it starts check your fuel injectors with a noid light also check crankshaft position sensor. If the pump wont pump check the fuse and connection to the fuel pump for voltage.

2000 chevy venture. wont start. change fuel pump runs perfectly for one day. next day the van start and drives out of driveway sputters and dies. starts and sputters back home. change the fuel censor. ...

Testing is the way to a fix . Fuel pump pressure testing , electrical testing . Viewing engine sensor data on a scan tool . Instead of guessing as to the problem learn to test or take it to a qualified repair shop . Changing ECU without doing it correctly can cause problems that were not there before . PCM - engine computers need to be programmed , dealer only.

I can not get my car to start i think i have a fuel problem

Have you sprayed brake cleaner in the intake to see if it will start, if it does then check the fuel pump fuses and the fuel relay, before changing the fuel pump make sure there is power to the fuel pump (test light works fine) always change the fuel filter when putting in a new fuel pump.

Won't start

Change your fuel filter. Probably clogged. If you get it started, even though it's clogged, the extra work required by the fuel pump to push fuel through will wear out the pump prematurely.

Be prepared to change your fuel pump soon. You probably have two pumps: a boost pump to push it up out of the tank, and a high pressure pump to drive your injectors. So if you change the filter, and you get it running, get ready for a pump change. And while you're doing that, go ahead and change out both pumps. Fuel pumps work together just like your headlamps. If one headlamp goes out, you change both, so do the same with your fuel pumps.
