Question about 2002 Toyota 4Runner
My 2002 4runner won't start. It makes a spinning/clicking noise when I turn the ignition. The battery is just over a year old. The car has 105K miles. It has been slow to start the last couple of days, but I never heard the clicking -- it was just kinda slow. The radio and clock were working fine yesterday while I was driving.
I am working on my mother-in-law's 2002 4Runner right now. The problem is a common one for Toyota starters and is likely due to worn contacts in the starter itself. When you engage the starter by turning the key, the worn contacts are preventing enough current from getting to the starter bendix (this is the rod that engages the flywheel and makes the engine turn over. you can hear the starter spinning, but the gear on the starter bendix is not engaged with the flywheel. If you can remove the starter, it is likely you can buy new contacts from Toyota, or your local parts store. Or you can buy a new/refurbished starter from your parts store for less than $200 and you will get money back for giving them your old starter. The tricky part is getting the starter out, which is what I am working on right now.

It sounds like you have a weak battery. Try to "jump" your battery with another vehicle, and see if the problem contionues. If it does, then, you may need a new starter.

2002 4-Runner won't start. It started with a dead battery. I put a brand new batter in and now almost nothing. No lights on the dash no radio nothing. The only thing that works is the wireless remote. The panic button works and it will lock and unlock the car.
