Question about 1996 Buick LeSabre

AC Clutch in Buick Lesabre

Ok, first thanks to everyone who helped me though this to this point. Th last problem I have is....if I start the car and turn the ac on...I can ''push'' on the AC clutch with a closet rod and the thing will engage. As soon as I turn the car off or ac off it disengages like normal. However if I turn the AC back on, I have to manually push the clutch to the pully. When contact is made, it will hold. I measured the air gap and it is at .120'' to .130''. This is extremely high considering the air gap should ideally be betweent .020 and .030. Thus the problem that the magnet is not strong enough to ''grab'' the clutch and engage it on its own. My question is, how exactly on a 96 LeSabre do you adjust the clutch to the proper airgap? The clutch itself looks fairly good..not real worn down. Thanks.

Found out my clutch was good, just the tension bars going from the middle of the clutch to the pads were bent. I did the old screwdriver and hammer trick and bent them back into their proper place. AC works like a charm!

I hardly see that it is necessary to replace a clutch when it is only a few years old. I talked to the previous owner and he said that he bent the clutch by accident trying to take off the old pulley to replace it as it was squeaking. Come to find out, the squeaking was cured by belt dressing. BTW, it is so easy to tell someone to replace something when you are not the one that has to shell out $400 to do so. I say if it is not broke, don't fix it. After all, this is fixya, not replaceya.

Rent the clutch tool from the parts house. Then remove the nut in the center of the clutch. It should have a washer as well. Set these aside and install the clutch removal tool per directions in the box. Remove the front hub with tool and be very careful so you don't drop the small group of flat washers that are inside. It is these washers that determine the space in the clutch gap. Simply add or remove washers to adjust the gap. Once the gap is set then re-assemble and test. Hope this helps get you cool again. Good luck. If you feel that this solution has answered you question then please rate this solution. Thanks cj2176.

Depends on what kind of noise and where its coming from.
Could be a problem inside the compressor, or the ac clutch, or something else.
Did you get a warranty with the compressor ?

The serpentine belt on my 1984 Buick Lesabre keeps breaking when turn on air conditioner or heater why?

Most likely you have a seized AC compressor. When you ask for AC or heat the AC clutch engages with the pulley wheel that normally spins freely when the AC is off. As the pulley wheel is no longer able to turn because of the seized compressor the belt will either slip or snap.

Sounds to me like you have a leak leak somewhere. They can put a dye in the lines to find out where the leak is, Then have that fixed and get it recharged again. Its an expensive procedure though. I hope this helped

AC clutch is grinding how do i fix? 1997 buick lesabre

Remove the clutch with a clutch removal tool after removing nut. The pulley for the belt does not need to be removed. The clutch needs to be shimmed with some small thin shims or shim that look like washers to space it out from the pulley. You will not lose freon doing this.

Air conditoning gets warm at idle. 1998 buick

It seems the automatic idling lifter (sensor) once you switch on the a AC system has failed and thus at low idling the Ac compressor clutch gives in stopping the compressor to spin.
You have to check tht system out.
Hope this helps!
