Gauge will be on half and fall to empty or jump back to half
The fuel gauge sender unit and the fuel pump are two separate items but on many cars they share the same space and are integrated into the same housing or unit.
It is unlikely each will interfere or affect the operation of the other unless the unit has been carelessly repaired and refitted. The fuel gauge float arm is particularly vulnerable to damage.
After much use the rheostat track the float arm operates becomes worn and might provide intermittent gauge readings but the most common reason for this is poor electrical connections.

The fuel pump and fuel gauges are separate components and the problem you have is entirely related to fuel gauge operation and has nothing to do with the fuel pump.
There is plenty of material around you can read up on with respect to fuel gauge issues. Like this.................
Diagnose Fuel Gauge
You don't say what year or model of vehicle you have but if you do a search you will probably find reports from other owners of your model with exactly the same problem and what the cause was found to be in that case. The problem you have described seems to suggest intermittent power loss to the fuel gauge circuit.
