It can be your starter or the silencer. U have to get it checked or it can be your ignition. I'm pretty sure its 1 of these 3 things. I dont think its silencer buh it can be ingition or silencer.

sounds like a Crank Position sensor. It's hitting at random instead of in tune with where the crank is at any given time. So I say "Yep" to your question "Maybe a new crank sensor?" : )

Pulled fuse#14 on 98 passat now won't start over

Fuse 14 is for the CCM, Comfort Control Module, and controls the lighting inside the vehicle and also the ignition. Your car will not start with this fuse blown or removed.

VW Passat failing to start/security alarm issues are they linked?

Usually on the passat, if the immobiliser is on, there is a yellow key symbol flashing on the clocks as you try and start it. Do the doors unlock with the remote key? If no flashing light and the key fob working, i would be looking at possibly starter relay. This is either located under the fuse box or under a plastic cover near the windscreen under the bonnet. Hi

If the coolant temperature sensor is of the 4 wire type then these are a common failure on VW's.
