Okay, so I read the manual and I called Toyota customer service, and it appears that this was a security measure built in for the Corolla. When the key is turned counterclockwise, it triggrs what they call a "valet" luggage security system. The trunk lock remains in a horizontal position and the trunk release by the driver's side is deactivated (hence no "pop") so that no unwanted person can get to the items in you trunk. In order to reactivate the trunk release and open the trunk, the "master" must be used and turned clockwise (to the right) in the trunk door. The beginning of the owners manual shows a picture of what the master key looks like. (It was on page 7 in my manual).

Hope this helps someone, or at least save a trip to the locksmith :-).

You have a very common problem. There is a lot of dirt and corrosion in your keyway on the trunk lock. The best help I can offer you is to lube it VERY liberally with WD-40, and slide the key in and out whilst spraying and wiping off the dirt. This may help you out.

Sorry, I was under the impression thatthe lock stoped working. A change of the one thumb would be appreciated.

I have my '92 Toyota corolla for about 10 years and only have one key. Today, the lock got turned to the left and now it seems to be in the security set-up, where, the inside release won't work, but the key won't turn either. Since I never had another key (and this never happened) how can I open the trunk?

You've taken the steps to loosen it, sounds like it is completely bad, you may have to get it replaced at this point, the cylinders probably have gone bad at this point, or try and have a new key made it might catch them better. Good luck

How do i change burned out parking lights on 1996 toyota corolla

The burnt out parking light can only be accessed thru the trunk.

Open the trunk and remove the panel covering/ protecting the bulb compartment.

Then you turn the bulb to the left. Easy does it.

Good luck.

How do i open the truk of my 98 toyota corrola?

There is a lever to open the trunk next to the fuel door lever under the left front side of the driver seat.

If the lever is broken or missing, check if the back seats recline, allowing access to the trunk. Crawl in and pull the lever going to the lock cylinder.

If neither suggestion works, call a locksmith.

2004 TOYOTA COROLLA TRUNK

I have a corolla 2003 and I had the same problem. I turned the key to the left and the lock turned left, engaging the valet parking mechanism. I could not turn the key to the right and could not get access to the trunk because the lever next to the driver seat was disengaged.
The way I solved this problem is as follow:on the back driver seat I pulled the back seat forward to leave an opening and snick my arm in the trunck. Then I grabbed the cable used to latch the seat and I pulled forward, i.e. toward the front of the car. The cable is connectred to the trunck so that it can be disconnected easily if pulled towards the front. If you pull towards the back it will remain attached to the trunck. So grab the cable an pull towards the front, and it will release itself. Since the cable is flexible, you can pull it out of the trunk from the same the opening you put your arm, and then disenagage the driver back seat. Fold forward the back seat and get into the trunk and use the lever in the latch of the trunck to open it. The turnk will open.

If the lock does not turn, you need to disconnect the lock from the mechanism, so that the driver seat lever can start working again. To do this, and with the trunk open, remove the cover holded by nine plastic pins. Do not break the pins. After removing the cover, you will see the lock holded by two nuts. Remove the nuts with a rachet. The lock will be loose, and disconnect the lever that connects the lock to the latch. At this point the driver seat lever will start working again. Close the trunk and verify that the driver seat lever opens the trunk. Now you can open and close the trunk , and have time to call the dealer for a new lock.
Good luck.
