Car wont start during cold winter mornings

Sounds like you cold start injector may have gone bad. Pushing a gas pedal to the floor usually stops a fuel injected vehicle from allowing fuel into the cylinders, try pushing the pedal about half the way instead of to the floor and have the cold start injector checked or changed.

It is likely that the engine management system has lost its base line calibration. If the battery is weak and during the crank to start the voltage dipped low enough the Engine Control Module lost its calibration. If the pedal is depressed during the crank the TPS (Throttle position sensor) will lose the idle position for the throttle. The hunting and surging and resultant stalling is the ECM seeking out the limits and re-establishing the throttle idle plate location.

If battery is OK than running the car allowing the calibration of the vehicle to reestablish itself will correct the problem. My experience is that this happens if the gas pedal is depressed during crank with a very very low battery voltage. Always the best way is to not touch the pedal during any cranking starting procedure. Or after a battery replacement.

To accelerate the calibration process attempt to run the car ingear tring not to allow the car to stall. After afew munites the car will have reestablished its normal running calibration and you will be allset.

Possibly a bad or dirty Idle Air Control motor. The engine computer controls the operation of this motor to control idle speed. A pintle on the motor extends and retracts, according to signal from the computer. The pintle controls an air passage below it to give or take away air during idle -when the throttle shaft is closed, no air will get into the engine through the throttle body except through the idle air passage . The IAC motor or valve is on the throttle body, with a 4 wire connector. Take it off and look for carbon or coking deposits around the valve's pintle, and in the air passage beneath it. With the idle valve off, plug the connector back on it, then watch the pintle as the key is turned to on. If there is no movement whatsoever, the motor is probably bad.

I have also heard that a bad coolant temperature sensor can cause such a hard start. If the computer does not know the engine is cold, it won't put enough gas into the cylinders for easy starts. The engine needs more gas to start and run when cold.

Most likely the problem was the floor mat. In the winter they get very wet and when the car sits they freeze. When you get back in the car, the now very stiff floor mats have a tendency to slide up under the pedals. happened to me and scared the tar out of me. Just check the mats and see if they haven't moved up under or against the pedals.

my truck starts right up if I hold the petal to the floor but wont start if I don't hold petal to floor

water in gas and lines drain and filler up and add dry gas,allso when you start your car and its low on fuel it needs to be on level ground. i had a minni van that gave me the same problems in the winter time. hope this helps

try this, if the car wont start push the pedal all the way to the floor and hold it ther while you crank. It sounds like you are flooding the car some how. Pushing the pedal to the floor puts the car into clear flood mode and it shuts off the fuel flow. try and see just a suggestion
