Quite often changing the transmission fluid will correct such a problem especially if it is a high-mileage car.

tried that with filter, didn't help. thanks

Does that model have a vacuum modulator? Check it for vacuum, also I have had very good success with Berryman Chemseal (no connection) with helping balky transmissions (not just for leaks). It's cheap and if you don't have a vacuum modulator problem (or electronics if it has them) and Berrymans doesn't fix your problem, the next step is most likely a transmission rebuild.

Levels not check first? and for color, and metal dust?

  1. black ATF and nasty? or too low, do not guess how to check it, use the operators guide, no guessing..
  2. check fuses
  3. scan it yet? ( or go to any shop in town and ask them, to....)
is this hard?
what if TCM is in limphome mode.? scanner told you !

and get it serviced, ATF FULL FLUSH AND FILTER.
Consider warm ATF is thinner and passes through a packed filter more easy.
all from a bad filter. (packed in crud)

TRANSMISSION

Fuse # 20 or 21 gets power through ignition. This fuse controls PRNDL indicator, speedometer, tach, & will cause transmission to not shift gears correctly. Ours took off in 3rd gear when put in Overdrive & only ran in 3rd gear. If we tried to manually shift thru gears (auto trans), it had 1st, 3rd, reverse. No 2nd or over drive. Replaced ignition. Fixed problem. Root problem was Electric motor that engaged 4 wheel low side was bad. Every time we used 4 Low side it threw power surge through ignition & blew ignition out. Good Luck.

Shift lock

It could possibly be a bad electrical connection or poor connection with the transmission. Did the mechanic get any error codes?

He put it in D or R and it still in Neutral, raving the engine doesn't help. After several tries, and usually like ~5 minute warmup if finally gets in D and then the car drives perfectly fine. It only...

First doublecheck your transmission fluid level. Its the red handled dipstick near the back of the motor. You check trans fluid level WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING. If that is ok, you might be getting towards the end of that trannys life. My mother had a bonninville, for the last 2 years we had to drop it down to 1st (the 1 on the gear shift) then into drive. This worked for a couple years before it finally blew out. Try going from 1st then into "D" and make sure it shifts, You can always shift it manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to drive if needed. Aint gunna hurt anything, just dont go over 3-4 on you tachometer. You dont wanna redline it.

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo hesitates in 2nd gear when cold

Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.
