What would leak oil onto the starter

the oil leak could be a bad valve cover gasket needing replacement, a head gasket leaking oil, a leaking intake gasket and oil running down along the engine block and dripping. it could be an oil pressure switch that is leaking. it is near the starter while driving or engine running can spray oil onto the starter. unless the oil leak is very bad and has been leaking a long time onto the starter will not cause it to act like a dead battery even then not likely. have a starter draw test down to check condition of the starter.

Coolant leak under starter

If the water pump is near the starter it is in the
wrong place,it should be on front of engine.(sorry)
You could be loosing water from a pipe above the starter
one which goes to the heater.Although minor,it is leaking
onto starter and you do not want that. You must cover or
put something over starter to stop it getting wet,and this
is URGENT like yesterday. You will short the whole car
if not.

Massive oil leak when drivivg.

I have the same problem with my 2002 grand am and its the oil sensor sending unit it has a straight stream coming out. It sits right above the starter and saturates the starter with oil. It looks you could be leaking oil in many different spots. It looks like an oxygen sensor and very easy to change. If the threads are frozen from heat spray it with wd40 and let it sit for a while before loosening the sensor. Some oil will come out, I suggest draining the oil and disconnecting the battery because the starter is so close to the sensor before doing this job. I hope this helps you.

Had an oil leak- not major but there for a couple of years. Replaced a starter and after a few days of being just fine but not checking oil, it started with terrible grinding, drove home 2 miles with no...

Have you checked the oil level on your dipstick? You say you had a slight oil leak... but you DID maintain the oil level, right? In other words, you realized oil was coming out so you replaced the oil that had leaked out every now and again? You may have a shot crankshaft bearing, could be a chunked flywheel, or even a defective starter. My guess? New starter engaged but got stuck. The grinding you heard was the flywheel tearing the teeth off of the starter as you drove. You got it home, tried to start it, but there were no teeth left on the starter. Pull the starter... I'll bet it looks like a trainwreck. I doubt you siezed you engine though, especially if it was running when you shut it off.

99 Dodge stratus blows the fuse to the starter.

Starter could have gotten saturated and leaked into the starter. Take starter to part store to have tested. If leaked in it could short. Or the windings could have blown just enough to cause it to short.

4th starter in 1 1/2 years on a 2002 sable

Ask the mech to dissassemble an old starter if it is not turned in for a core. If it is an oil leak are you using a lot of oil to keep it up to the full mark on dipstick. The copper windings in the starter may be soaked with oil, and the oil will attract road grime and dirt and be so clogged that the brushes cannot contack windings and clog up the whole works. Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking down onto starter, they may have vibrated a little loose and just need tightened or replaced. Can really be the only thing that would go wrong with the starter, unless your battery is way to small or way to big. Check CCA, Cold cranking amps with the owners manual for replacement battery size.
