Question about 2005 Chevrolet Aveo

1 Answer

Has anyone had a problem getting the gear shift out of park? Several people had difficulty getting the gear shift out of park to drive the car. They would have to jiggle the gear shift back and forth before they could get it into drive. This happened on more then one occassion. The gear shift had to be repaired after someone took the cap of the shifter and manually changed the shift to drive.

Sounds like a part called a parking "Pawl" is hanging up. You could try to park the way they show you in driving school, with the rear of the tire against the curb when the car is facing uphill. Theory is that the tire will chock the vehicle against the curb as a bumper stop and prevent rolling backwards. This will minimize pressure on the inside of the transmission parking pawl.

You can go to and search for "Consumer complaints" or Recalls and enter your vehicle info. Then see if others are having problems like yours.

2003 honda pilot won't shift into drive

On my Honda Pilot I experienced the same problem having difficulty changing the gear shifter from park to drive. I drove it to my Honda dealer and the technician explained that the problem was a brake sensor was worn and needed to be replaced. This is because the brakes must be engaged before shifting from park into drive and that the sensor gets worn over time. As I remember, the sensor and labor to install was somewhere between $25 to $50 to replace. It now works like a charm.

1999 Volvo S80 stuck in park

Hi there this sounds like a common fault it also happens on xc70 xc90 an new s80 if you remove the suround from the gear selector you should be able to see the gear linkage cable too the left hand side towards the back of the cable there is a push fit lock nut it is yellow and plastic which locks cable into position it sounds as though the push nut is not gripping the cable if you gently prise open the yellow part to the left of th car it should open the cable is spring loaded so it will stay in position after releaseing the nut push the nut as far forward as it will go so it moves forward on the cable once you have done this push the yellow push nut back in to secure the cable then you should be able to use your car again but what i would sugest is to get it replaced as its started to wear and will only happen again at a later date hope this helps tony.t

We just recently broke the gear shift cable in the steering column and the car will not start anymore. We have had it started for the starter so we could drive it home. The battery, fuses and starter are...

make sure it's all the way in park. Or the shift cable could be broken and now it is in reverse or drive not allowing you to start it. I had to climb under the car and manually shift it into park. MAKE SURE YOU EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON! If you car truely is in park and you manually shift it into any other gear and it is on an incline it will run you over!

Vehicle will not come out of N regardless of where the gear shift is moved to. Vehicle starts fine, but cannot be shift out of N.

I had a similar problem with a 1993 Dodge Dakota 4x4 club cab. With in the first year of ownership I had difficulty with the shifting from park to drive , the gear shift lever would not move or sometimes it would get stuck in neutral and I could not get it out. I took it into the local Chrysler/ Dodge dealer and they determined it was the park sprague. But after they replaced that part it continued to happpen. So, then after they contacted Chrysler Engineers they settled on replacing the back end of the transmission from a 1994 model year. That fixed the problem. They said the rod that goes from your gear shift lever into the transmission case did not line up properly with the stuff inside the transmission, therefore causing it to hang up. I am not sure if this is your same situation or not.
