Starter cranks engine wont

Can you turn the engine by turning the alternator or water pump ?
If the engine turns freely, could be a problem with the cables to the starter or the starter itself.

I have a 97 buick century and been having trouble starting it, wal-mart said bad battery so replaced it then had trouble starting and said may be something else wrong, went home, now car wont start, could...

it could mean that the starter is bad, but it could also be something easy like a loose connection on the battery a bad battery wire, or a dead battery indicating the alternator may not be functioning
you stated that you have been having problems starting it, I am assuming that it was really slow cranking over which is why you replaced the battery. if this is the case then you are probably in need of a starter.
hope this helps

1990 Buick Century Limited wont start, but makes a click sound under hood on drivers side when you turn the key. But no battery noise. Battery measures a 11.50-12.00 . 154xxx miles Thank you

Check for power at the starter on the large wire. There should be battery voltage at all times. Next check for power on the small wire at the starter. There should be twelve volts with the key in the crank position. If both of those check out you need a starter.

Have you changed the battery as the alternator works in conjunction with it. Also go buy a cheap multimeter and with battery in and charge check what fuses are drawing power when off. I would think it is power locks, and aftermarket stereo or power antenna.

My buicks battery has just died. When I jumped it it goes to turn over for a second with a click and then dies down, but all the lights come on. How do I know if its the starter alternator or battery

if the lights are bright and you hear a clicking and your heat blows good, the head lights are still real bright after trying to start a few time replace the starter (you can try to hit the starter with a hammer otr somthing heavy a few times and then try to start if it sounds better or starts replace the starter) if the battery goes dead try to jumpit if it starts then dies after a few min its the alt if it starts runs good and you let it run for about half hour shut it off and it wont restart rite away its the battery.

You probably have a dead battery. It could be due to a bad alternator, yes, but battery may need replaced. Put battery on charger overnight and see if it starts. Have battery tested, replace if needed.
