To shift into 4lo you must come to a complete stop, put the transmission in neutral, and step on the brake pedal, then push the 4lo button. To shift out of 4lo, do the same thing. If it's not going into 4hi, check every vacuum line you can find. Everything is vacuum operated. If your vacuum lines are old and crusty or mushy, they may collapse when vacuum is applied. There is one vacuum hose that is hidden under the battery tray that almost always comes loose, and it is the one that locks the front axle. You will need to remove the battery and tray to get to it. If the hose is dried out or stiff, replace it with a new one that is flexible enough to make the sharp bend required to hook up to the actuator. Also check the actuators under the vehicle at the transfer case and front axle.
now I personaly didn't have it switch into 4Lo but I had my jimmy try to switch into 4 weel drive all on it's own, I would seriously get a mechanic to look check out the pump that ingages your 4 weel drive cause it is faulty and causing damage to your front dif
check the solenoid on the front differential. i had a similar problem. when i would start to engage 4wd low/high and it would blow the fuse. i replaced the front solenoid and fixed my problem.
the solenoid can be found in the right side of the front differential. costs about $100 at local part store and takes 5-10 to changeout with an adjustable wrench.
if you slide under the truck and try moving the cv with your hands and there is any looseness in joint or noise the joint is indeed worn out, the cv joint if bad should not stop the truck from shifting into 4 wheel drive it could be stuck in 4wd and this would cause cv joints to break, if u have access to lift get all tires in air and try2 vs 4 drive and see if tires turn if not lift front tires off ground tires should turn freelyin 2wd, as u turn tires listen to wheel bearing and shaft noises for grinding clunking indicating bad parts, simple tricks that may help u find problems for cheap good luck!!
