The 2002 passat is probably similar to your 98 .. if so, the fuses are located indeed on the left side of the dash but you have to get to them by opening the door fully .. there is a plastic panel that snaps off the far left edge of the dash (normally hidden by the door) .. if you are not careful you will break off a locating pin about in the middle .. doesnt seem to hurt anything (it has spring clips to hold it in place ... if you took off the plastic molding just in front of that panel then it might be easier to get the panel off and on .. but i just pulled it off ... the fuses have a little card (on the panel) with hieroglyphics on both sides that tell you what the fuses are for .. really awful might recognize a few .. there is a bunch of relays behind the fuses ..also no clue as to what they do .. i bought a repair manual and to my surprise it also doesnt tell you anything about what does what .. .. putting the panel back on is tricky .. you have reach in and phisically position the spring clips in their slots .. then it pops on easily ..

Check ignition switch. Connect a wire from battery positive to any ignition fed point on your fuse box and ignition should turn on. Start the car. If it starts replace ignition switch.

Where is fuse box on 1998 v.w. beetle?

I worked on a 1998 passat and the fuse panel was cleaverly hidden on the left side of the driver's dash. There was a small release button and the panel flipped out from under the underside of the dash.

For 1998 VW Passat V6 the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram.
The cigarette lighter fuse for 1998 VW Passat V6 is placed in the fuse box / relay plate fascia 1, (driver's door open). See pictures below:

The signal lights stopped working on my 1998 volkwagen passat 1.8 engine can it be a fuse and if so where is the fuse panel?

the fuse panels are under the dash near drivers footwell or in the glove box or under the glove box if you have a cubby hole or something like this on a seperate panel to the rest of the dash the chances are it is behind this panel

Indicators stopped working

This is a common problem on the 96-01cars, both the Passat and the Audi A4. The turn relay has died on you. It's built into the hazard light switch on the dash. This is a $20-30 part available at any Audi or VW dealership. Replace it and you'll be fixed.
