Was it the "Idle air control valve" you replaced? If not, I would.

Did you try spray cleaning inside of throttle body & plate with throttle body cleaner as well? Just a note, although I have cleaned & revived quite a few Idle air control valves over the years, there are some that cleaning does not help, and is not recommended on certain vehicles, as it is a waste of time. I guess price of new one will dictate whether to try or not. Another thing I would try, is stop at a radio shack or TV repair place & get a can of tuner spray cleaner, and use it to clean your mass air flow sensor. With that said, does it matter whether cold or warm engine at all?

You might need to replace the fuel pump relay. $50 part. Easy to replace, is next to the fuse box. Common problem on Volvo 850s. Also, check the thermostat in the air flow box under the air filter. New thermostat is $18 or some people say you can remove the thermostat permanently and fix the cool air intake in the open position.

Get a mechanic to use a hand gun to test the timing at idle speed until its where it should be at. It should be around 750 rpm or so depending on make of car. The mechanic should know what rpm your car should be at idle speed.

Fuel injection relay. It is located under the hood inside the fuse box. It is either red or green in color. It is one of the larger relays. This is classic symptom of these things going bad. The heat causes the relay to swell and not engage properly. They die out every couple of years. Usually the car will start again after it cools down.

Idle speed for my volvo 850 too low. needs turning up slightly? when i start the car the idle revs are too low and car cuts out. but when its warmed up idling is fine.

Idol is controled by the computer. You need to run a diagnostic on the vehicle to determine what sensor is going bad. My best guess at this point is throttle position sensor or erg.

96 volvo 850 speedometer somtimes works then it drops to 0

Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.

Car stalls

Hey jkcalli!
Have you checked for any error codes?
Since your car is an 850 you should check your fuel pump relay, which is infamous for causing intermittent starting problems. Open the hood and remove the fuse box cover (4 torx screws), revealing the relays. If one of them is a green one marked 103 you should replace it with the newer, improved red relay. A used relay is cheap and should do just fine.

Also, you should be able to hear the fuel pump working when turning the ignition to on. After doing this a couple of times the pressure becomes high enough for the pump not to engage. If so wait for the pressure to drop before listening for it again.
Here's a topic with some info on the relay and how to check the voltage at the pump:http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?showtopic=15505&st=80&p=80586&#entry80586

If fuel delivery is not the problem you should check for spark. If you do not have spark the problem is likely coil, camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor.
Good luck!

Car is stalling and idleing irradically.

I Would Suggest That You Complete A Engine Cylinder Leak Down Test.....(not A Compression Test But A Leak Down Test) this will tell you if you have internal problems....possible worn rings or a burnt valve(s) I would use a smoke machine to check for vacuum leaks also. Good Luck

1993 volvo 850 heater blower works sometime tell me why?

These models had problems with the blower motor power stage, which is what controls the fan speed, and the blower motors wear out. There a good chance it needs both!
