Water pump on 2005 Chevy Equinox

The truck keeps over heating. Thermostat changed, flushed, but we realize it is the water pump. Where is it located and is it very difficult to change?

Water pump is locate on the front center of the engine.

I will rate water pump change as a 7/10 in difficulty scale.

You should check for special tool(s) requirement from the library before you start.

It's a good time to change the drive belt at the same time.

50/50 coolant mix is fine.

If you haul heavy load or in cold climate then bump it up to 60/40 mix

DO NOT FORGET to find or draw the belt routing diagram before you undo the tension.

A 30 second sketch will save you a lot of time.

Do the cooling fans come on ? Your vehicle should have two fans controlled by The PCM - engine computer energizing three different relay's for low and high speed .

My 2005 equinox runs at a high temperature in idle and the heater doesn't work properly.

could be because the water doesnt seem to be circulating .... remove the pump next and check the impellar ,,,, after that if its ok i would flush out both heater rad and engine rad to clear any blockages

I have a chevy equinox that was over heating and would leak coolent took it to the garage they said it was a water pump and the thermostats they changed them and flushed the tank. Not a week latee it over...

I suspect there was an air pocket in the cooling system, sounds like the garage didn't bleed the system completely, just keep an eye on the coolant level, if it remains constant I would suggest your problem has been resolved. But don't forget, only remove coolant cap when engine is cold. Regards Mike

I replaced the heater coil in my 2005 chevy equinox and it is still over heating and the heat only works for a short time , then the cold air blows, then the heat kicks back on. A certified mechanic did...

Its a combination of 2 things water pump failing and thermostat stuck closed / or open. Replace these and you should be all fixed. Also make sure your cooling fans operate correctly.
Good luck.

Need to flush cooling system of a 2005 chevy equinox and change the thermostat

You can buy a flush kit from your local auto supply store to add to your cooling system for this and future flushing. As for changing your thermostat - simply remove the thermostat housing - remove the old thermostat - replace with new (be sure it is the one rated for the season at hand) - replace gaskets (or use RTV gasket maker) and reinstall housing. Fill the system with proper % ratio of coolant to water (usually 50/50). Drive away happy.:) PS You can find your thermostat housing by following the top rad hose from the rad back to it at the intake manifold.

I have a 2005 Chevy Equinox, keeps over heating. We changed the thermostat, then the water pump, but it is still running hot. No leaks and no check engine light. Not sure what else the problem can be.

These trucks are bad about developing an air lock in the coolant system. Be sure that there is no air in the system after sealing. This can be done by using the bleeder on the top of the engine near the water jacket. Hope this helps. good luck.
