Tell me please, is there one wire or two wires leading to the sending unit in the fuel tank? Remember, there should be two other wires that go inside the tank for the fuel pump. The one(s) you're looking for usually plug on to a 6mm copper stud on top of the sending unit, fuel tank assy. Please provide more info and I'll help you troublrshoot it.

Hi,you will have to check the sender unit in the tank this is more likely to be the fault.
Hope this helps you.

My BMW X1 shut off in the middle of the road eventhough it had a 1/4 tank of petrol left. BMW suggested I fill it up with petrol and it started again. I am left confused as to why that happened...

The fuel sender unit could be faulty. It says 1/4 tank even though it is almost empty. Carry a jerry can of gas in the back , and run it down to 1/4 or less to see if the problem repeats itself.
The gas guage and trip computer are only as accurate as the float in the tank.

I need to know if i can check on the two wires that go inside the tank for the fuel pump. I have been told the one i looking for usually plug on to a 6mm copper stud on top of the sending unit, fuel tank...

Access is under the back seat. Any other gauge's acting up as well? If so check all the fuses under the bonnet first (Not just one(s) for dash)

Petrol gauge stuck on empty and light constantly

Sounds like a broken gas tank sensor in the gas tank. The sending unit has probably gone out.

Petrol gauge was working fine before a 5 week holiday. Car not used during this time. Now petrol gauge shows tank empty, even after I had filled the tank. What is wrong? How do you fix this?

sounds like the float is either got a hole in it and is full of fuel, or the whole float assembly is seized in the empty position.
was the car left for 5 weeks empty of fuel?

Petrol light stays on in my bmw 318i

the only problem is the floater of your gas tank.It is easy to be fixed all you need to do is to take the back seat off and you will going to see the upper portion of your gas tank there's a circular or square portion plate that have a 4 bolt's on it and a electrical wire just loose the bolt's and pull the floater up, then you will see there it's electrical mechanism just clean it by using a sand paper to clean the bronze part then turn on the key switch, move the floater up and down check the gas gauge. it is not pricey though if you want it to be fixed by a mechanic.

FUEL GAUGE AND LIGHT STAYS ON NEARLY EMPTY AFTER PUTTTING IN PETROL.WHATS THE MOST LIKLY FAULT. DODGY GAUGE OR FLOAT IN PETROL TANK.THANKS FLYNN.

Do you mean that the gauge registers as empty, even after the tank is filled? Probably the sending unit needs to be replaced (it's in the tank, likely partially attached to the fuel pump).
