How do I replace shifter cable 1982 olds cutlass superm

It\'s right where the shifter cable goes into the shaft, look
right next to the steering cloumn under the hood,the switch
won\'t keep the car from moving tho,it just wouldn\'t start.But you
could look there to make sure the cable hasn\'t broken or come
unhooked. The cable goes to an arm about 3 inches long just
make sure the arm moves when shifting.

Diagram? just v belts. It should have 4...... ALT PS A/C and Air Pump.

there is a selenoid that unlocks the shifter it may be broke. you can also check your brake switch.

they is a switch under steerihg wheel that isnt makeing contact which is for the turn signals and emergency flashers is needs to be replaced or try to take some electrical contact cleaner and spray it in where u trun the emergency flashers on push them on and off while spraying this in there then check the brake lights if it dont work then replace the switch not expensive

The Cable from the Brake peddle is Stuck/Broken..
Replace or Look under the Dash Above the Pedal for a Cable heading towards the Shifter.

Might be lose or Fell out of "Slot" the holds it with the Clip.

I took the console apart so I could see what the scene was. The release button would not rease the shifter lever so I took the cable connection off, which freed up the lever. The transmission was in second gear when I turned off the engine the day before so I moved the now freed lever to the second gear position and then reconnected the cable connectors to the shifter connection. The cable and the shifter mechanism now being in sinc allowed me to put the shifter in Park and start the engine. I have tested the vehicle and the all the gears can be shifted normally.
