Replace the out put speed sensor. The reason it is in 2nd gear.(limp mode) Looking down at the front of the transmission, it is the sensor on the right. The dieing could be a dirty air filter, throttle body and IAC motor.

the speed sensor is for Overdrive only, it does not shift the gears it sends the signal to the transmission control module that in turn signals the overdrive shift solenoid to engage/shift into OD.

This same thing happened to my daughter,s car, and it ended up being fixed with a transmission speed sensor. This sensor not only runs the speedometer, it helps tell the transmission when to shift too.

Mounted on the trany is a speedometer sensor. The vehical will not up-shift it, sensor, is malfunctioning. The vehicles computer doesn't know that it is not going fast enough to change gears.
