Are you speaking of the clutch release cable? Or does the shifter actually operate off of a cable to change the gears? I will be able to answer the question with a bit more info.

1996 Ford Ranger xlt manual transmission can"t shift into 3rd and 4th gear

If it grinds when trying to shift, it is the synchronizers. Rebuild. If it pops out of gear. there is a plastic part at the top of the transmission that wears out. It fits around the ball of the shifter. It is two pieces. You'll have to remove the floor plate and pull it up to access the bolts to remove the shifter and replace those plastic pieces.

The car does not show the speed on the speedometer what can be the problem?

First you would have to know if your car has a speedometer cable. If it does, it may be broken. However, the meter itself could be broken as well. Now in order to diagnose which part is at fault. The speedometer cable must be removed and checked, if ok the speedometer itself might be defective. To check your speedometer you can check it without being removed by, sticking a piece of speedo cable or the complete cable into the meter. The other end of it you would have to attach it to a drill (it would be a good idea to turn it by hand first, to see in which direction it turns first before connecting the drill) and turn it on at very low speed to see if it works. if all these checks alright, the problem could be in the gear that attaches the cable to the transmission or differential. Some cars have an electronic speedo driven by a sensor that operates via a wire that will require an electric diagram and more knowledge. And usually, in those type of cars other issues will develop in regard to this problem such as trouble codes and erratic shifting
Hope, this helps you.

I need to the piece is that keeps the transmision

You need a gear shift cable. just had one replaced. The little plastic ring piece at teh end broke and fell off the cable and Ford stated that I needed to replace whole cable since the little piece was not sold as an individual part. To get it fix ranges from $200 -$300 unless you know how to take off steering column and replace it. The part/cable actual costs about 70-80 bucks. Good luck!

Saturn SL1 Shifter to Shiftstick

I had the same problem over a year and a half ago. I went to the closest Saturn dealership to get the replacement plastic piece. Turned out that the ENTIRE shift cable assembly was the smallest part that could be purchased to repair this. The cable assembly was over $200 at that time. I opted to forgo the ridiculous expense for this tiny little plastic part. True story: with a little heavy safety wire and a large washer I jury rigged the washer to hold the end of the shift cable in the fitting at the bottom of the shift stick. The washer acts as a keeper and the wire, wrapped in a basket around the back side keeps everything together. It still shifts reliably, a little looser than when it was new, but I saved $200 in parts (99% of which weren't broken) and probably a couple of hours of labor at least. One end of the cable assembly has to be attached to the transmission by the way and is not easily accessible. Sounds hokey but it really worked, still works!
