  1. You have to do a compression test. It requires a special tool that goes in the spark plug hole. If you just want to check your compression in general, you can probably rent or borrow the guage. If you are looking for specific info, for example bad rings or bad valves, it might be wiser to have it done in a shop with some experience.

We have a 1993 cutlass sierra with less than a 100,000 miles, all of a sudden it started sputtering and shaking when driven, any suggestions what could be the issue

It could be multiple things. The easiest I would start with is the spark plugs and spark plug wires. If they are bad it will cause a misfire in the motor which would cause shaking. They are fairly cheap and easy to replace. It could also be a plugged fuel filter, a weak fuel pump, bad distributor cap, these are just a few things to check out. It's hard to tell what it is without actually being there. But here are the basic rules, no compression, no fuel, no spark, no start.

87 olds cutlass ciera has spark and fuel but won't start

Have you done a compression check? These engines have a tendency, after 80K miles to shear a tooth off the cam gear. What will happen then is that the crank will spin, but the cam won't. This will cause the cam sensor to APPEAR bad because there is no activity. The REAL problem is that since the cam don't turn, the valves don't open and close, thus no compression. The motor is non-interference so if it did break the cam gear (there is no timing chain), you only need to replace the gear, re-timing the crank/cam as you go. If this happened, you will not have even compression because some valves will stay open, some will stay closed.

1993 cutlass cierra spark plugs get black

That could be a sign of rich burn, have the vacuums checked for leakage, and have the codes read to see if a sensor is bad,,posibilities, are, map sensor,or mass air flow,or a bad pressure regulator.

1992 olds ciera just shout off

Sounds like a ignition control module failure. Check for spark at a spark plug wire. No spark then suspect module failure. Good spark-- Suspect possible fuel delivery problem. If spark is good then fuel pump may have failed.

Bad engine dead miss in 1994 oldsmobile cutlass ciera

1. You need to verify that the spark plug wires are indeed going to their proper cylinders and not crossed.

2. You need to check all the cylinders for the ability to achieve full compression. I had a vehicle that had a Engine Miss code on the OBDII computer and couldn't find any reason for it until we checked the compressions and found 1 cylinder had none which was causing the code to appear.

Good Luck
