Be sure to check the top of the transmission (behind the battery and in front of the brake fluid reservoir), and be sure the shift cable is connected. There is a metal clip that tends to fall off from time to time. Hopefully you still have it under the hood, otherwise you need to get it at a saturn dealership (or a salvage yard).

I HAVE A 98 GRAND CHEROKEE STUCK IN ALL WHEEL DRIVE AND THE SHIFTER MOVES FREELY

You may have broken a retainer clip on the linkage. Raise the vehicle and look where the shifter comes through the floor while a helper moves the shifter. Verify the linkage arm moves with the shifter. If not, then look closely at the linkage arm and bottom of the shifter shaft to see if either broke or if the clip is missing.
Good luck!

I have a 2005 Nissan Note and Im having problems putting it into gear after its been off in park overnight. It took ages to get it out of park and into reverse. I couldnt find Nissan Note on your list.

yes sounds like the gear shifter linkage is out of whack or jammed check the transmission fluid also make sure its not low take off your cover on the shifter and see if it is stuck also see if the tranny fluid is ok and not burnt cause if burnt it will be thin and not let the gears move around freely

Gearshift in truck is not shifting the transmission, everything inside steering column looks ok, yet no movement on linkage under the truck 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 4WD 5.3liter

You'll need to try and narrow it down. You can undo the shifter cable from the gear shifter and from the trans it's self. See if it moves freely. Check to see if the lever on the side of the trans moves also, it will have more resistance(be sure to block the wheels and set the parking break). Also check movement for the gear shifter it's self.
Report back with which one is bound up, so we can further asisst you!

4x4 shifter moves around freely with no resistance

My stepson also has a 99 grand cherokee and had the same problem they have a cable that connects the shifter to the transfer case. his problem was the cable broke. I changed it for him and works fine now but it's not easy to change so do not try to change it yourself unless you know what your doing.

I believe the transmission linkage on my 2001 tahoe has somehow become disconnected. I'm looking for a diagram of this linkage. It is in park and when I go to change gears, the shifter just about...

look under the truck on the drivers side.you will see the shifter rod on the tranny. if the cable end is not connected to the ball reconnect it if its connected have some one move the gear selector while you watchit. if the cable doesnt move its broken and will need to be replaced. if the sector moves on the tranny and its not going into gear the tranny will need to come apart to find the problem. PS MAKE SURE THE TRUCK IS NOT RUNNING AND THE PERSON MOVING THE SELECTOR KEEPS THEIR FOOT ON THE BRAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If both cable ends are attached then the cable broke. Replace it.

Shifter won't shift gears

Have someone look @ linkage on trans. while someone moves shift lever thru the gears. If lever @ trans doesn't move then its in the linkage between the column and trans. (possible clip or pin broken @ linkage jounts). If lever @ trans moves then its a trans. internal prob.

Manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.
