I have a 1987 camaro rs, 2.8, i need to know the wires coming from my distributor, they hook into my icm, ones green, ones yellow, i just need to know where they correspond to on my icm, it has a p for positive and n for negative im assuming.

Check the icm plug with a led testlight for pulse while the engine is cranking. Test the wire connector with the small wires going into the coil for pulse.The v8 has a opti-spark distributor behind the waterpump that is prone to failure. It has the pickup inside it that tells the icm when to spark. If no pulse at icm distributor is bad. If pulse at icm but not at coil, icm or wiring between icm and coil is bad.The coil also needs pos.+ power on 1 terminal to operate. Be SURE to check the security light on the dash. If VATS [vehicle anti theft system] fails its usually within the 2 wires going from the key chip in the ignition tumbler to the body control module. Mine were purple and tan.Trying to start it with the wrong key can put it in lockout mode also. There are bypass modules available online for vats problems or you can even install a resistor in the wire to bypass the keychip part and the door alarms still work.
Yes, it COULD be the ignition control module ( ICM ). this component is usually mounted inside the distributor - follow where the wires go into the distributor, and that should be the ICM. The ICM requires dielectric grease on the backside to work properly, and sometimes the grease dries up, breaking the circuit needed to work. There is also another small coil mounted inside the distributor that goes around the dist. shaft called a pickup coil - these go bad too, but are much harder to change as the distributor must be removed to change out this coil. Many auto parts stores like Autozone have the necessary equipment to test the ICM if you pull it out and take it in - I would suggest this BEFORE you buy a replacement. Hope this helps!
Check the distributor module (ICM), it may have gone bad and needs to
be replaced. It's around $40.00 and it's under the rotor in the
distributor assembly. Check the red lead wire to the HEI for voltage,
there should be 12 volts. It common for the ICM to fail on the HEI
system when they heat up and if you go to Auto Zone, they can give you the step by step
instructions to replace the ICM. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad
First you need to determin witch one is #1 on cap Witch usely is the one directly behind carb. or throutle body. than its perty strate forward from there rotor runs clockwise. Cap only goes on one way. Food for thought when you chg. cap or wires one at a time is the rule even for a seasoned mechanic.
Look on the passengers side of the engine,between the head,and the oil pan.If it is missing,there will be a threaded hole for it to screw into,unless a different engine has been put in the car.If so,find the wire(green)and route it to the new knock sensor you will have to purchase,and mount it with a nut,threw the hole on the alternator bracket.This sensor has to be grounded.If it has no know knock sensor,it is suposed to,and if it is not there,find the wire and install it.You will not beleive the difference in the engine performance.If I can help let me know.Ron.>>email@example.com
