You can use two small flathead screwdrivers. What you need to do first is the unclip the connection. Once you unclip it, you need to push in on the smaller side of the clip with a regular flat head screwdriver. When you push it in, you also have to try to push the hinged side clip in as well. The hinged side clip needs to be straightened out so the you can pull the filter pipe out. I found the easiest way to do this is to line the two opening up, and while I'm pushing on the smaller side of the clip, stick a small screwdriver on the backside and pry it out. It is a pain to do it without the special tool, it took me about 10-15 minutes to make pry the green "ring" off so that I could pull out the line.

There is a tool that you need to do this. it looks like a small barrel on one side. There is tiny fingers on the inside of the connector that this tool pushes back into the fitting. done correctly will come of easy. you can purchase or rent from your local auto parts store

Does a 1999 cavalier gas tank have an access panel

Unfortionally it doesn't but am guessing you need to replace the fuel pump assembly. I can tell you that your tank isn't all that hard to pull out providing you do have an assistant to help you. You only have 2 straps holding yours up. Dissconnect the line at the fuel filter and can leave the other end on the tank. The side you take off on the filter is a quick disconnect so it's easy. A hint that may help is to twist the line back and forth in order to remove dirt up in there which makes sqeezing the quick disconnects difficult at times. Blowing it with air helps too. Also when disconnecting, puch the line towards the filter and then sqeeze and pull. Then I think there are one or 2 other lines (also quick dissconnect) and then the filler tube and vent. Loosen the 2 straps, lower a bit with help and while it's coming down and you are able to reach the electrical connections, disconnect and drop the tank. One other litle tip is to be sure NOT to bend the straps up because it can make it a pain when trying to start the bolt when installing the tank back in the car. You may have known all this but just in case I thought I could help with a few tips.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier 4cyl?

Fig. 2: Using a 21mm back-up wrench and a 16mm wrench on the line, loosen the feed line from the filter 91141p83.jpg
Fig. 3: Carefully unthread the feed line from the filter and . . . 91141p84.jpg
Fig. 4: . . . remove the filter from the retaining bracket by pulling the filter outward 91141p85.jpg
NOTE: The vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with "Quick Connect'' fuel fittings. For more information regarding these fittings, please refer to Section 5 of this manual. An inline filter can be found in the fuel feed line attached to the rear crossmember of the vehicle. CAUTION
Before disconnecting any component of the fuel system, refer to the fuel pressure release procedures found in Section 5.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined in Section 5.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Grasp the filter and nylon fuel line fitting on the tank-to-filter line. Twist the "quick-connect'' fitting 1?4 or a turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Use compressed air to blow out the dirt from the fittings at the end of the fuel filter.
  4. Detach the quick-connect fitting by pushing inward toward the filter and grasping the plastic tab around the connector and pull apart. If additional assistance is required to disconnect the fitting, tool J 38778 or equivalent can be placed between the filter and the fitting release mechanism to carefully force the two apart. Be careful not to bend the special tool. NOTE: Always use a back-up wrench anytime the fuel filter is removed or installed.
  5. Using a backup wrench (where possible) to prevent overtorquing the lines or fittings, loosen and disconnect the feed line from the filter. Be sure to position a rag in order to catch any remaining fuel which may escape when the fittings are loosened.
  6. Remove the fuel filter from the retaining bracket. To install:
  7. Before installing a new filter, apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter. This will ensure proper attachment and prevent a fuel leak.
  8. Position the filter into the retaining bracket with the directional arrow facing away from the fuel tank, towards the throttle body. NOTE: The filter has an arrow (fuel flow direction) on the side of the case, be sure to install it correctly in the system, with the arrow facing away from the fuel tank.
  9. Push the connectors on the quick-connect fitting together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place. Pull on both ends of the connection to be sure they are secure.
  10. Connect the fuel feed line to the filter, then tighten, using a backup wrench to prevent damage, to 20-22 ft. lbs. (27-30 Nm).
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the fuel filler cap, then start the engine and check for leaks.

The fuel filter may be at the end of it life time and need to be replace. I believe the fuel filter is under the battery bolted to the frame rail. Its a cylinder shape with a fuel line on both end with quick connect fittings. IN the fuse box, remove the fuse to the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay with the engine running, this will depressurize the fuel line. The fuel line on the filter are quick connect fittings, depress the tab's on the fuel line and push towards the filter and the line should just pop off. If you find it to hard to depress the tabs, use a pair of pliers. But be careful not to damage the fuel line. Install the new filter, place fuse or relay back in for the fuel pump. start the engine and look for leaks. If the check engine light came on, disconnect the battery to clear the light, but make sure the radio is turned off before you disconnect the battery for 5 min. Reconnect and everything should be good to go. Hope this helps. keep me posted.
