Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima
Most people disconnect the negative - just google it to make sure.
Autozone will scan it for free. Not sure if the will reset the code - may depend on who you get.

Have the vehicle scanned , fix the problem that tripped the SES light and normally it goes out on its own if it doesn't try unplugging the possitive cable of your battery for 5 min.
