Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier that had the belt tensioner replaced. It is also making a noise from the timing chain like the tensioner is not functioning correctly. At the same time it started not shifting correctly and the rpms would rev up and then when you release the gas pedal it would shift. I noticed today after removing it from the mechanic who could not be sure what it was that it started making a loud knocking noise and would die when you come to a stop. It will start up but sounds terrible. Any help would be great as I need to get this car running again.

I have a 1989 Chevy Cavalier Z24 2.8 motor how to tell if the timing chain slipped?

If it has a timing chain and its slipped then there will be all sorts of trouble. It may not run, there will be lots of noise and basically you are in for a major rework. Timing chains in a well maintained engine will do upwards of 200k miles. The timing chain is kept tight by spring tensioners and oil pressure. Why do you think there is a problem? You don't say what the symptoms are? Are you sure its got a chain and not a belt?

How do I replace a timing chain in an 1997 chevy caviller

Hi there,

Generally, in "chain" driven engines, it is not neccessary to change the timing chain unless it is seriously stretched or broken (only timing/cam "belts" require interval changing).

However, if you are experiencing the symptom of chain "rattle", then I would first reccommend you change to the correct grade of engine oil, then secondly, change the chain "tensioner".

2004 chevy cavaliar 2.2liter engine turns over but wont start. Im looking for timing belt placement.

Hello chriso201: My name is Roger and I can answer this question. The Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 engine does not have a timing belt. This engine uses a timing chain. Check the compression if you have less then 100 psi on the cylinders I would think timing chain. Any thing over 100 the chain should be ok. I would prefer to see above 150 psi. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
