2000 vw beetle 5 spd tranny is hard to shift at slightly elevated

Rpm's, it doesn't grind like sincronizers and I was wondering if it could be low oil in the transmission.

Hello,well at what rpm it shifts at of course depends on how hard your pressing the accelerator at that moment,if you floor the accelerator it will shift at higher rpm (red line) but if you take off very slowly it should shift at a much lower rpm....but to answer your question 3000-3500 is a good shifting rpm( if the gauge red lines at 6000-6500 rpm) and firm shifting is a good thing,slow,sluggish and hesitant shifting is a sign of bad things to come from a tranny!! ps keep the engine oil,and transmission oil changed for long life out of your car engine and tranny. good luck and enjoy your new car......yz-maniac.

I have a 99 vw beetle 2.0 and it will not shift until it is over 4000 rpm if it is in drive and I accelarate to 3000 or 3500 and stay it won't shift up no matter how long I hold it there, then if I go over...


Sorry to tell you, but your model Beetle is famous for transmission problems. Google 99 Beetle transmission and you will see. I think it is a dealer only job too.

The gear is not selecting


Maybe check the idle adjustment. If an automatic will only shift at certain rpm. Also you might need the filter changed in tranny. If it was shifting hard first then that's it. There is a relay for the sincronizer also.

all vw cars have a computer on board that controls a fuzzylogic gearbox.the racier you drive the higher the revs before upchange and vise versa ie low/low change so the harder you drive the more noticable the gearshift will be in auto mode.manual mode will always be jerky compared to a std auto box.THE JOYS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY.....

WHAT OIL IT NEEDS MY 2000 VW BEETLE 2.0 L WITH 140000 MILES


I found 2 listings for the 2.0L engine, A and B. The 'A' had no info on oil type, the 'B' stated all temperature ranges require type 'SJ' and 5/30 or 5/40 weight. Because the mileage is 140k, I am wondering how often you must add oil between changes. If you add none, or under a quart, 5/30 is ok, if you must add oil more often, use the heavier weight, 5/40.

MAKE SURE TURBO IS WORKING NO RESTRICTED EXHAUST..ALL PLUGS AND WIRES ARE GOOD.SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING.HAVE TRANSMISSION PRESSURE TESTED.IF FLUID LEVEL GOOD AND TRANSMISSION FILTER NOT STOPPED UP.PROBLEM COULD BE TRANSMISSION SHIFT VALVES OR TRANSMISSION PUMP OUT PUT PRESSURE TOO LOW.

I have a '99 Eddie B. Explorer....there is no light at the O/D


If you have the push button on the dash it is called an e40d tranny and if you do not have the button it is called and AODE tranny. Usually you should not see an increase in RPM's unless you are doing over 70 mph. At around 45 you will problem not see an RPM increase. As for the shudder when going up a hill it sounds like it is having issues going into overdrive could be a shift solenoid. Try having the tranny flushed and filter changed and see if this helps it out.

TRANSMISSION PROBLEM


Check your trans fuild on drivers side of trans should be a plug that you unscrew to check the level if its full.

Sound like the torque conveter is locking up. Your looking at a costly repair. These cars have so many problems that VW won't recall none of them. So I think you should trade it in for an American product. Good Luck
