If it is just the basic rear end you just jack the rear end up remove tire, remove differential backing plate(inspection plate) while removing be sure to have a drain pan to catch gear fluid block the front tires for safety you may have to put in neutral to turn axles till you see about a 7mm bolt on passenger side remove bolt do not break very important. push the center metal rod out, c claps should fall off pull axle out. Install new axle replace parts as the were do not over tighten bolt fill with proper fluid check owners manuel for proper gear oil.

you only have to rmove brakes if it is disc brakes which a 2004 most likely is. the spyder gears will normally just fall out so to speak it all goes back in easily just look at everything closely before you remove. and yes sometimes you might have to push axle in and out a little to make the clip fall. My 15 year old kid did one with the same instructions I posted

Remove wheels, brakes, diff. cover, and slide out spider gear pin. the pin holding the little gears in place in the diff.. this probably has a screw or bolt holding it in. remove spider gears upper and lower with bushing plates. push axles inward to remove the big c clips, slide axle out. be careful not to damage the axle seals with the teeth on the axle. reverse order to reinstall

I would highly recommend buying (or getting it from the library) the after-market serivec manual from Haynes:
2004 Silverado manual
There are surely experts here (I'm not among them) but we own the service manual for each of our vehicles so I can assess whether it's a job I want to do or leave to a trained mechanic. This also gives you some idea whether the quote you are getting from a service shop is reasonable or not.

How to remove rear axle 03 chevy silverado

You will have to remove the rear end plate off of the back of the rear end. Then turn the carrier untill you see a big silver pin that goes through the spider gears. Those will be 4 small gears in the rear end carrier. If you look at the right side of the carrier were the pin goes through it you will see a small bolt head, That bolt goes through the carrier and holds the pin in place. Remove that bolt then reach up in the rear end housing and push the pin towards you untill it comes out. ( DO NOT TURN ANYTHING AFTER YOU REMOVE THE PIN) are the spider gears will fall out.

Now get someone to push the axel in while you are looking at the 4 small gears in the housing, when they push the axel in a C-clip will fall off the end of the axel and into the rear end, You will see it fall out. Then just pull the axel out.

When you put the axel back in, push it all the way in then slide the c-clip over the end of the axel and then pull out on axel and that will hold the clip in place untill you put the big long pin back in the carrier. I hope you understand, just watch what you are doing. GOOD LUCK.

How to remove rear axel from ford crown victoria tne axel is loose and making noise leaking fluid i think it neds a new seal

do u mean the axle has "play" when u grab the tire and wiggle it up and down?? if it has play, then it propbably needs an AXLE SEAL AND AXLE BEARING.you will have to carefully inspect the axle itself where the bearing rides for any gouging or damage. THIS JOB requires a decent amount of mechanical skill. 1ST you need to remove the rear end COVER and drain out the gear oil into a drain pan.2ND remove the brake caliper and rotor . 3RD spin the" ring and pinion " around until u see a 5/16 bolt that passes thru from the pass. side to the drivers side. u have to remove this bolt. u will need to "hold "the gears from turning in order to break loose this bolt. 4TH remove this bolt and slide out the large metal ""PIN" that 'divides" the rear end in half. NOW CAREFULLY WITHOUT TURNING THE REAR END SPIDER GEARS,PUSH IN THE AXLE TOWARDS THE INSIDE SO U CAN REMOVE THE "C-CLIP" AT INNER END OF AXLE. now u can slide out axle and youll be able to replace seal and if needed axle bearing. let me know if u need more info.

Rear Axel Seal

Wheel, brakes etc that are in way of pulling axle out have to come off. Drain rear end fluid, remove rear housing cover, remove bolt that holds pin in differential, remove differential pin, push in slightly on axle to remove "U" clip that holds shaft in, then slide shaft out. replace seal. Reverse procedure for re-install & fill with gear lube. If any questions, get back to us.
