Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Brake lights are out and the car will not go into gear. By accident we found that we can get it in gear by turning on the four-way flashers.

Check the switch on the brake pedal itself. It has 1 to 2 wires comming from it. It acts as the brake light activator and a safety switch so the car cannot be started if it is in gear. The switch is mounted on the metal bar that extends from the foot "pad" upwards.

The flasher unit is located under the dash, near the steering column. This could also be caused by a faulty ground wire. Check the wiring for broken, bare, or loose wires or connections.

Doing research for a law firm regarding an accident involving a Caterpillar 55 Challenger. Question is if the Challenger had it's four-way flashers on, would the turn signal still work?

Four way flashers and turn signals are typically on the same circuit. If this is the case than no the turn signals would not work since the turn signal switch has been bypassed by the four way flasher.

I wiring diagram for this model would confirm whether or not it was wired in the above fashion.

2001 Town & country brake lights not working, but the third brake light and tail lights are working. I also just replaced the brake light switch thinking it was the problem, but it wasnt

I think the brake light and turn signal are on the same bulb on these, correct?

If so do the turn signals work?

If they do than I would bet that the turn signal switch itself is the problem. The power for the brake lights is routed through the switch (except for the third brake light that is supplied power directly form the brake switch). The turn signal switch will interrupt power from the brake switch and supply power from the turn signal flasher depending on if the right or left turn signal is engaged.

Sometimes wiggleing the lever or pushing the four way flasher button with the brake pedal depressed will intermittantly cuase the brake lights to work. If this is the case than it is the turn signal switch that is causing the problem.

Have four way flashers in front of car but no turn signals on front or rear of car but yet i still have parking lights and brake lights and have replaced the bulbs and the fuses are not bad and the flasher...

The most common cause of your problem is the Flasher Unit. Functioning four way flashers doesn't mean the existing unit is working. Also, there are multiple flasher units on some cars. Since the bulbs are all working, replacing the flasher unit makes the most sense.

Brake lights and turn signals stopped at same time... the 4 ways don't flash either

well i just fix a 2002 vette with no turn signals and no 4 ways,,it was the four way flasher was bad and thats part of the 4 way switch,,,but the brake lights work,,i think you might have a bad IPC,instrument panel cluster,,that controls everything,,the 4 ways flasher only control 4 ways and turn signals,,,so i dont think you prob is the flasher i think its internal to the IPC,,i rec take to chevy dealer get it checked

No parking front or rear, side markers, brake or dash lights.

Sounds like an earth / ground wiring problem at the rear lighting units, when the flashers are on and you press the brake pedal the power is back earthing through the flashers. Check all earth/ground points at the rear lights.....Good luck hope this helps
