My 93 chevy truck wont shift into 3rd gear. goes into reverse fine 1st and 2nd gear with no problems and no slipping just wont go into 3rd whats the problem?

I say band adjustment in transmission, have done by shop. might be just a vacuum hose or modulator, but I don't think so

Transmission question

You are right on the first one.
Never ever shift into reverse while moving at all.
The reason is all the planetary gears are spiral cut, so while it is not bad to go from one forward gear to another, reverse forces the whole gear system to slam agains the opposite side of the housing, from where is normally pushes. If they did not use spiral cut gears, this would be an issue. But they use spiral cut because it gives more surface area and strength.
This is called a "reverse drop", and doing is only a few times can pound a transmission to junk.

But you are wrong on the second I think.
While you feel the thunk of the hydraulic clutches and bands engaging, that thunk is still there if you have the brake on as well, you just don't feel it. The brakes are not going to reduce the cluck on the CV joints or anything, so it really does not help, I believe. But perhaps someone can tell me a reason I did not think of.

Transmission question

Hey, doing that to any automatic trans can burn the bands in it faster than you than you think. Bands are what the gears are called in a transmission.Hope your friend has money cause if he keeps doing that he will be puting new transmissions in all the time.

When you install an engine, you don't "line up" gears. It's likely that either you have a worn shift fork or synchro (both inside the transmission).

I assume your talking standard shift transmission and the gear shift jumps out of 1 gear. You need a transmission job.

I have a 2004 that did that, im sorry to say this but you are going to need a new transmission eather really soon or a lil ways down the road but you need a new one the problem is your syncronisers in your transmission are starting to go bad witch is what alows your gears to come together at the right timing now you can avoid grindin your gears by stayin out of the rpms that it grinds in eather high or low but eventually you will need a new transmission bc eventually all of your gears will begin to grind like that and then eventually you just wont even be able to get the car in gear not due to the clutch going bad but just bc the constant grindin of the gears will cause your gears in your transmission to go out completly
