Question about 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

3 Answers

2001 Cruiser often won't go into ANY gear!

I took it in to a place yesterday (not Chrysler) and they did a 'diagnostic' and said it looks like either the clutch or transmission will need to be replaced. $$!!! I had the diagnostic faxed to daughter so someone at her work, who repairs the company's vehicles, suggested I check other places and ask about the slave cylinder and/or master cylinder. Called local Chrysler place this morning and she said it sounds like input/output speed sensor, much cheaper for this retired grandma to deal with.
Basically no problem w/ shifting when the engine is cold, but once it's warmed up, and I stop at a light, I cannot get it into any gear! I have to turn off the engine to move shifter at all!
A couple months ago I took it to the first place (above) because some lights on the dash would come on intermittently - brakes, trac, & ABS. They couldn't find the problem and didn't have a code (not sure what this is), but said it could be a speed sensor. I didn't do anything about it. Any these two things (lights coming on and inability to shift) be related?
Sorry this is long. You can tell I don't have a clue!
TIA

Some times having the cheaper fix is not the solution to the matter. yes, abs light coming on and the inability to shift is related in most cars it is some safty matters that safegard your engine. I would have the slave cylinder changed and then try adjusting the clutch.

If it is a manual, it could be the clutch or synchronizers. If it is an automatic, the speed sensors or solenoid pack are your most likely culprits.

If there is an advanced auto parts or an autozone near you, go there, they can hook up a code scanner to find out why the light is on, it will show the cause, and they don't charge to do it. Takes about a minute to do it. Good luck.

Check engine light comes on periodically, it does'nt change the way it runs but I am always concerned that something may be wrong.

I just had this problem with my 2005 PT Cruiser. I took the car to my local repair shop (Chrysler has abandoned this area in Florida) and had it connected to a diagnostic computer. Guess what? Loose gas cap. Looking at the cap you can see the gasket is getting funny. Repair shop recommended buying a new gas cap.

Where is diagnostic socket on 2000 pt cruiser,2l auto

it has to be (by law) within 3 feet from the ignition switch-get down low and look under the steering wheel (by where the driver's knees are) they are almost universally there.

We have a Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.0 ltr 90K on the clock, always serviced. Now will not go into reverse gear. All other gears and clutch operation is fine....any suggestions

the shift cables can be adjusted but you will have to remove the cover around the console. Also look at the top of the transmission to see if any of the cables came off. Oreilly sells a chilton manual for pt cruisers on page 7a-2 it shows the cables and how to adjust them.
