I need to reinstall my steering wheel on a 1976 chevy truck

Some steering shafts have a master spline ( 2 splines as one) as a way of fitting the wheel in the correct position. You will need to check this out and align the raised bit with the bit missing and there shpuld be no problem

I have a 2004 explorer. i get in the car put the key in ignition and turn it. everything turns on but the car. i have to unlock the steering wheel, lift the steering wheel and at the same time turn the key...

Not sure if this helps, but I've seen cases where the steering wheel and tilt assembly loosen up from the steering column. When this happens, the linkage that activates the ignition switch becomes "too short". That's why if you lift the wheel, it "lengthens" the linkage and activates the switch. If this is your problem, the steering wheel has to come off to tighten the tilt assembly bolts. I don't recommend messing with it personally due to the complexity buried inside modern steering wheels (air bag, horn, tilt, cruise controls, audio controls, etc.). Take it somewhere you trust.

Good luck.

My 1996 nissan sentra runs good but when i come to a stop and turn steering wheel the idle drops and stalls a little , almost shuts down . Is there a quick solution ?

sounds like your power steering idle up switch is not working. Rpms should go up when you used your steering. Rhere is a switch built into the power steering system to raise rpms when you are turning steering wheel. It looks like it has a problem.

Tilt wheel broken steering floating

General Motor cars will have this problem if you use the steering wheel as leverage to get in and out of the front seat. They use a ratcheting ball and socket to allow the column to tilt. t is held together with 4 screws, like a box. These screws work loose and allow the wheel to feel like it floats. It is a hard job esp. with an air bag to deal with. The steering column has to be almost removed from the car to fix. Removing the steering wheel and all covers down to the floor board / firewall area. The screws have to be re-tightened and loctite or glued in place. A job better suited for a dealer or local shop who can deal with the air bag. Sorry.
