My tachometer cut out and the battery light came on as well as the oil light flashing doesnt start without a jump....my car is 1997 jetta turbo diesel. plus i always have to plug it in to heat the oil. all...

Belt still on the end of the engine that drives the alternator and a/c compressor?

If so, you may have battery fuse block burn out syndrome.

Check the fuses on top of the battery under the black cover.

The 30amp fuses burn the plastic holder and voltage no longer flows.

As far as starting, this may be electrical too.

Engine must crank over 300rpm for it to start. All electronics must be functioning for it to start to.

Report back with what you find.

Hard cold start 1997 Jetta gas

can't say for sure but almost all engines that have come to me needing ether to cold start have poor compression. test the compression first.
you sould never need to use ether on a gas engine and very carefully on a diesel when very cold.

It is hard starting my VW 2003 Jetta. It usually take 5 to 10 cranking before it turns over. Then it run normally. It only happens when the car has not been driven for about 6 hours.
