If the knocking is caused by internal engine damage, that is a different issue.
If only rough idle, the basics say to check for leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum, something of that nature.
How long since a tune-up? Are there any applicable trouble codes? You may be able to get some codes by cycling the ignition switch, on--off, on--off, on then the mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes. If that won't work, have to try something else.

the only problem that vehicle has is with cooling fans is relay/module or electrical harness to module that burns up located behind and under right front headlamp assy must remove headlamp to access relay/module that is what powers up fan motor module assy.

the reason it getting hot when stopped is the fan relay is out thus not turning the cooling fan on,this is a time consuming job,the relay is located on the passenger side tip of the frame behind the headlight, the grill, headlights, bumper, and tip of the front fender has to be loosened up to get to it.
The relay is about 70.00 or so,the engine cools down when you drive as you are forcing air through the radiator to cool it down,as for the heater issue probably caused by boiling the anti freeze out ,
To make sure the engine is ok do a compression check to verify the headgasket and heads are ok,as for smelling the sweet smell which is antifreeze probably due to overheating and pushing the fluid out of the cap or tank.
