I don't see how it would be the wheel bearings does this while idling still in reverse. Also makes clunk noise when putting into gear.sometimes I may very faintly hear it in drive.I have a video of the sound I'm trying to put on YouTube maybe I can share on here.

here is video of noise I iput on YouTube it does not do justice though hard to hear the noise.

Could it be the transmission mount?? I have replaced both the engine mounts upper and lower? Seems to stop the noise once I hit the gas in reverse or at least I don't hear it. Also does not do the noise every time it's reverse only some times. Which is kind of frustrating because I have took the car twice to a transmission shop and the car does not make the noise. They even drove the car and sad that it seemed fine. Sad to bring it back when it's making the noise. Can I get a response please?

Could be the engine mounts are worn. This will allow a low vibration during reverse

Yes, it could be your transmission mount are worn, or your tie rod ends are bad and will need to be replaced. A worn lower ball joint will also give you the same vibrations. Start with inspecting your lower ball joint and engine/transmission mounts along with your tie rod ends.

It is tough to get access to the transmission mount, since it is behind the driver's side front tire. If you happen to replace the ball joints, I recommend having the alignment checked at a shop.

Try to pinpoint the location of the noise. Wheel bearings will have a grinding sound, but you can hear/feel which wheel it comes from. Also, the heat shield on the catalyst converter can rattle if loose or mounts are loose/worn.

I would check the wheel bearings and CV axles first. If they are good. The rear planet in the transmission is going out. Rebuild or replace.

SOURCE: Reverse gear has grinding noise...?

Have them flush the fluid out under warranty and put in new fluid, and have them bleed the clutch lines in case air is getting in there. Audi and VW claim lifetime transmission fluid but it's BS - I've changed relatively low mile fluid from these cars and it was horrendous. It's possible that the fluid itself is causing trouble, but it's more likely that it is a synchro problem. If it was a clutch issue, you should have problems with more than just reverse gear - a clutch simply engages and disengages the engine and transmission, regardless of which gear it is. The problem (if not fixed by fluid) is in the transmission, and being under warranty, don't accept another "suggestion" like they're giving you. Changing your clutch isn't gonna do it.

SOURCE: Transmission slipping making noise

If u keep it below 25 miles an hour you should make it, but this loud noise worries me, this noise means something is coming apart, if it does it may lock the trans up, so keep the speed down.

SOURCE: grinding noise while driving.

Possible causes:

a) a brake disc shield is too close to the disc, and it's coming into contact in the circumstances you outline

b) pebbles stuck between the disc shield and the disk

c) dried out wheel bearings

d) worn Universal Joints in the drive shafts

e) worn A/C pump

f) worn alternator

g) worn water pump

Is the noise still present above 15 miles an hour and past 1500 rpm when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. gearbox in neutral?). The answer to this question may help you to pinpoint the source. I know it's stating the obvious but the fact that you're hearing a grinding sound means it's caused by something that is moving relative to something else. Again this should help narrow down the cause.

SOURCE: i have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee 4x2 , while

johnjnail_156.jpg
if you look at nthe picture above you will see the direct drive clutch, when the transmission shifts into 3rd gear this is the clutch that ingauges, and when it does it starts spinning the direct drive hub and there is a groop of bearings on this hub that only turn when the transmission is in 3rd gear so you must have a pice of one of the bearings broken ( if you remove the transmission oil pan you will probley find the pice that broke off ) now every time that bearing turns it will click when the ruff spot tuches the bearing support, there is no eazy fix the problem will only get worse untill the bearing completly fails and when this happens the transmission will fail and will need to be replaced....sorry

let me know if there i any thing else you need.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire that has problems shifting into gear. (manual trany). Have to force into 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and especially in reverse. Will grind going into reverse. Have to turn off...

Sounds like the clutch is going out. I would check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. Also check the clutch master cylinder fluid level.
