Question about 2002 Ford Escape

I can not get the rear brake drum off my 2006 ford escape

I have loosen the brake shoes but the drum will not even move a bit. Any ideas on how to get it off?

    Thank you ccn7. I had to do it a few times but I finally got a sledge hammer and hit it a couple of time and it pot off. Thank you so much.

    Thank you diagjunkie. I had to do it a few times but I finally got a sledge hammer and hit it a couple of time and it pot off. I was considering finding some screws that fit and try that when I decided to get the big guns out and try that first.

Is there a pretty good size bolt in the center some Ford cars you have to remove that if that not the case it might have alot of rust spray with wd40 tap all the way around drum with hammer or the should be 2 holes find screws to fit threads install and turn them inward until it forces brake drum off

Take some penatrent like PB blaster and spray around where the end of the axel protudes out of the center of the break drum, (thats where its stuck from rust) let it set for a while so it can work, than take a fairly large hammer and smack it either between the wheel studs or on the side of the break drum and it should pop off, if it dosent (you may have to do the procedure a couple of times) you may have to resort to useing heat like a torch around the center of drum, but thats where its hung up around the axel.

This happens when a spring breaks and does not pull the shohe back into their rest postion so the shoesare hanging, try tapping the drum with a hammer to loosen the drum from the shoes, make sure the emergency brake is fully released to. If you can't pry it off you may have to tourch them off. did it run till it was grinding metal to metal?

1) Make sure your parking brake isn't on (I've made that mistake),
and
2) Use a RUBBER MALLET to pound lightly on the outside of the drum to free it. Especially if your brake shoes are worn all the way down, it is likely that there is a ridge (a lip) on the inside surface of your brake drum. If this is the case, REPLACE THE BRAKE DRUMS WITH NEW. Check eBay for parts first, as you can often find new brake drums there cheaply.

Hello, The rear rotor has 2 sets of brakes on it. The other thing is to look for slight movement in the driveshaft when it clunks. Depending on the rearend, some have to have both rear wheels off the ground to turn each side. And of course the trans in Neutral.

With the rear wheel you have an Emergency brake and a drum brake inside the center of the Rotor.
The rear of the brake backing plate has a rubber plug which is covering the Star-wheel adjustment for those drum brakes. You can try to loosen the Star-wheel to disengage the Emergency brake shoes. You can try pulling the brake cables toward the cab, to loosen the cables.

If this does not help, your Emergency brake shoe probably rusted off the brake mount and is jammed inside the drum. The linings fall off the metal like banana skins. I can tell you that if the Emergency brakes are a State safety requirement, you need to consider new rotors because the drum portion is usually trashed with rust.

How to remove brake rotors on a 1996 ford explorer


How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

Remove rear drum brakes


Hit the drum with a hammer to loosen it up. The drums wont come off easy because the shoes form a litte bit of a ridge in the drum

Changing rear brakes how do you remove the drum from the pads on a 2006 ford escape with rear drum brakes?


i do it with a big hammer...spin and hit to loosen then some use a puller or a pry bar or screw driver to get them off

you mean parking brake cable? loosen parking brake cables put drums on , and adjust shoes till they lightly drag, now apply brakes a few times and check the adjustment again, if all ok, now adjust park brake cables, you want to adjust so park pedal goes 5-8 clicks till the wheels are "locked up" and the wheels spin free with the park brake off

Cannot remove rear brake drums


You need to back off the adjusters on the rear shoes to allow the worn drum to pass over the brake shoes.
A worn drum will have a unworn drum section on its outer edge where the brake shoes don't normally rub.
This must unworn ring must be able to pass over the brake shoes before you can get the drum off.

Two tools should be used through the brake adjuster access hole.
One small diameter blade screwdriver can be used to push the self adjuster lever away from the notched adjuster nut, while a second flat bladed tool is used to lever the adjuster nut, rotating it so as to back off brake shoe expander adjustment.

Brake drums


the brake shoes are likely stuck in the grooves worn into the drum. You need to back off the brake shoe adjusting wheel to loosen the brake shoes.
Also, the face of the drum usually has a couple of threaded holes you can screw bolts into to help pull the drums toward you.

First, hit all the way around the brake drum with a big hammer to loosen the drum from the center hub.
Then, istall the screws to help pull the drum.

to back off the adjuster with a screwdriver:

  1. NOTE: If the brake drum will not come off, follow these steps.
  2. Loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut (2047).
  3. Using a screwdriver, move the brake shoe adjusting lever (2A176) off the brake adjuster screw (2041).
  4. NOTE: Move the adjustment tool handle downward to loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.
    Use the Brake Adjustment Tool to loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.

Cannot remove the rear brake drum from 2003 ford windstar. How do I adjust the shoe to allow the brake drum to be removed?


You'll have to remove adjuster plug at backing plate, stick something small, in hole & lift adjuster off wheel, then turn wheel with adjuster tool or screwdriver, downward, to loosen.
