Just found your problem while looking for solutions to my own. My 2.0 8v 3door 97 golf gti can also cut out after driving for two or three minutes. Works fine one day then dies instantly 5 times the next...not a safe thing to happen pulling out of a junction!! Have researched problem and been told that it's probably fixable for £12-15. The "Hall Sender Relay" which is the fancy name for the ecu's power supply relay can go on the blink and cut power at any time causing instant shutdown...just like turning off the ignition key. Part number is 165906381 and available from a local vw dealer usually overnight. I'm fitting mine tomorrow 4/4/09...fingers crossed! Hope this helps others...worth a try for the cost involved.

Ok, start with basics my friend. Check all fuses. Replace any burnt fuses. If fuse burns again, there is a short circuit to ground. you will need to check the fuel pressure. You will need to get a fuel pressure guage and install it to your vehicle. Whether its the shrader valve on the fuel rail, or in line with the fuel line. If no fuel pressure when you turn the key to on, chances are, it will need a fuel pump. #2 if there is fuel pressure, you will need to check for spark. Install a spark tester between the spark plug and the spark plug wire. Crank engine, if tester lights, then there is spark. If not, check coil, module, computer. Also check for codes with a scanner. If there is a code, you will need to retrieve diagnostic tree for that particular code. Follow instructions carefully.

run the fault codes and look for a venting problem in the tank
your description suggests that there is a vacuum forming in the tank and causing a fuel starvation. If it has a vent valve on top of the tank check that it is not blocked

What cuts off fuel and spark while driving ?.

It's very possible you have a bad ignition switch. My '96 LXi had the same problem, plus it tended to randomly drop into "Limp Mode" at any speed.

After replacing the ignition switch (3 years ago) neither of those problems has resurfaced.

I had that problem. I unscrewed the idle control valve (near the air intake), applied contact cleaner spray and all dirt came out. After it was dry, I put it back on its place. No problem ever since.

Ford Focus cutting out

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

VW Golf MK3 1996 P - Car cuts out when slowing down. Battery and Oil lights come on. Restart the car then starts juggering. Its not a fluid purring from the engine.

i would start by cleaning out the throttle body. they collect soot and not have to be a lot either for it to mess up the idle speed, i had trhis on mine soon as i dipped the clutch to slow down the rpm dropped to about 400 to stall, i cleaned throttle body out ( taking air intake off and wipe round inside and the butterfly will be enough) and now it idles and the rpm dont drop below 900
