My 1991 XJ40 Daimler 4.0 suddenly dies - in the middle of driving

Hi there!

I just bought a 1991 XJ40 4.0 Daimler and it worked perfectly. Today I was driving on a highway and it sudenly died. I stoped, waited for a moment then it started OK. But the problem repeated again later. So it just happens that either in the middle of driving it dies or it also dies while standing still (engine running, gear in D position). Any ideas?

Thanks
Bostjan

SOURCE: Jaguar 2002 X-type - Engine dies - electrical problems

I have not got a jag yet, I am thinking about buying one I have owned bmws and audis. ALL CARS FROM europe have electircal probs. I dont know why, this prob sounds like a ground prob. I would check the controil mode on the firewall. Bmws always had a fuse there that would short out on the hood and cause the same prob. I just moved the fuse panel/controil down lower and never had the prob again. I know bmw are different but a car is a car.

SOURCE: Car XJ40. Model Year 1992 When

Check the transmission range sensor, if you already serviced the torque converter and the ECU is fine, you may need to replace the gear box.

Ensure gear box fluid is at level.

DAIMLER XJ40 COMPLIENCE PLATE LOCATION

The XJ 40 DOES NOT have a compliance plate as it is the first year they were owned by a American company Ford. The XJ 40 better known as the XJ 6 was fords experimenl change over. This went on from 1988 to 1994 and with every year you will find different things they changed that were problems with the preceding year . like the 88 & 89 had digital dash boards that failed a lot to hard wiring breaking so on 90 they changed that as well as a engine upgrade

Steering wheel up and down adjuster is jammed

Thank you for your question.
Let me try to assist...The tilt mechanisms are very reliable, and we experience very few failures. However, I have had to release a couple in the last few years...More than likely, the mechanism may just be loose, or bound up, as you have stated that it is in the highest position. Here is what you need to do: Under the steering column, remove the screws holding the lower plastic on. Seperate the bottom half from the top half, and set it aside. Remove the top half of the colum cover. Now, examine the tilt mechanism for loose bolts, or anything that may not move with the adjuster lever.
Sometimes, moving the adjuster lever and janking down on the wheel releases the bind, also.
I hope that this helps with your issue.
