If the oil light came on, it indicates that the engine has lost oil pressure, either due to loss of oil or a failed oil pump. This is a critical condition for the engine and requires IMMEDIATE SHUTDOWN of the engine to prevent catastrophic internal damage. If you ran the engine in this state, even for only a minute or two, the loss of power you are talking about occurred as a result of the internal engine components overheating from lack of lubrication. This causes them to swell up and bind, reducing power. The engine shutting off as a result of this is referred to as "seizing", where the internal engine components have melted together and locked up. Chances are when you say it won't start, what you are actually having occur is when turning the key, it doesn't even spin the engine in the attempt to start. If this is the case, you are looking at a new engine - or a new car.
Testimonial: "it makes a noie when i try to start it there is also a light that comes on with a pic of a car with a lock on it"
the car never did over heat or anything the oil light came on that was it i thought i would know if my car was overheating?
Actually, it DID overheat....not the coolant though, which is normally what overheating is caused by. The engine oil is more important than the coolant, and unfortunately, people aren't educated enough to know that unlike the Check Engine light, which means you need to service the engine soon, the OIL light means shut the engine off NOW!Engine oil goes to all the moving oars of the engine to keep them lubricated and moving smoothly, The engine coolant circulates in a jacket around the engine, keeping the oil cool enough to do its job. But when you stop circulating oil, the engine's internal metal parts will overheat so fast that the engine coolant, although it too will get hotter, will not get to the overheating temperature before the internal engine damage is done. The noise you hear when starting is the starter engaging the flexplate/flywheel. This is normal, except that normally when that "noise" occurs the engine would start to rotate and then start. Since the engine is seized, it cannot rotate. The car with the lock is the vehicle immobilizer, which is a normal light that comes on during attempted starts, and goes out after the engine fires up.

If the engine ran out of oil, then there's some serious damage done. If there was plenty of oil, then the oil pump shaft may have snapped or failed internally. Have a mechanic inspect the cause since he will have the necessary tools and equipment to do the job safely.
