Question about Lincoln Continental

1 Answer

1996 Lincoln Continental Serpentine / drive belt : I'm quite familiar w/ the belt removal & instalation process for the Merc Gr Marquis, Ford Crown Vic & Linc Town Car but, my newly purchased '96 Continental is a COMPLETELY different animal(!!!)-- Got the old belt off, with GREAT difficuly (mostly from underneath the car, where there's BARELY enough room for even MY skinny arms to fit!) Now, I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to get the new one on! I have the routing diagram BUT, there's simply not enough room to work! Do you have to remove a component or two (Pwr Steering Res... Coolant Resivoir[???]) I even checked the Factory Svc Manual, which was no help, & Haynes (usually mostly-useless, anyway) doesn't even make a manual for the Linc Cont! HELP. . . . . P L E A S E!!!

    Dear kirtec:
    Thanks for the response!

Please, don't get me wrong: I don't mean tosound like a "wise guy" or smart@$$ by saying this but, as my thread read "...I'm quite familiar w/ the belt removal & instalation process for the Merc Gr Marquis, Ford Crown Vic & Linc Town Car [so, I'm also familiar w/ a serpentine belt tool]..." My problem is that there doesn't seem to be enough room to "work" in the engine compartment, especially when it comes to the serp belt. Is there a certain order / method by-which I should be threading the belt through the pulleys?
    Thanks, in advance!

You need a serpentine belt installation tool. it is a 1 inch wide 2 foot long 3/16 inch thick steel flat with holes cut out for the tensioner bolts to fit in.there is no room for a socket.the tensioner is slackened first, then the belt can go on.you need the tool

2006 Mustang GT 3v soch supercharged V8. Where can I get a diagram showing how to replace the serpentine belt?

Diagrams are available from Gates, Dayco, and Continental (Contitech) for most serpentine belts. Replacing the belts shouldn't be undertaken unless you have the proper fitment tools and are familiar with alignment procedures. Serpentine belts are typically replaced every 60K miles and Gates Racing Blue are the finest on today's market, lasting bit longer under demanding driving conditions. Replace any accessory belts, the crankshaft front oil seal and water pump at the same time... you will thank me later!

Water pump 98 lincoln contenianal

If your engine looks the same as the video, the pump can removed without having to move other components out of the way.

Drain radiator

Loosen the pump pulley bolts with the serpentine belt still on. This will put tension on the pulley so it doesn\'t turn. Then take serpentine belt off. Then remove the four bolts on the water pump. Have a drip pan under the pump. Clean pump mating surface on the engine. Install new pump with O ring. The link below gives detailed info.

How do you replace the fan belt tensioner on a 2000 lincoln continental

I`m pretty sure your belt tensioner pully is just held on with a couple bolts.Remove your serpentine belt, your main belt.look at the pulley see where the bolts are that hold it on and remove them. They are spring loaded so when u take it off make sure you have the new one to put on because once you remove it ,it is no good and have to put the new one on.

Serpentine belt

There is a belt tensioner that has to be moved to release the tension on the belt. Once the tensioner is moved you can remove the belt and install the new one. Sometimes you need a special tool to move the tensioner.
Make sure you have a drawing of the routing of the belt, normally there is a sticker on the hood or the radiator support.

There should be a diagram of the route printed on the fan shroud or somewhere else under the hood of the vehicle.
