From what you describe it sounds like the shift linkage needs adjustment. Was any work done on the transmission,or did you bottom out recently? I don't think it's electrical. Also don't keep a lot of keys on your ignition key ring this can wear the key slot and also cause the erratic starts.Good luck.

My key won't go into ignition on my 2007 jetta

Try moving wheel back and forth while putting key in. Or if thats not it, take a screw driver flathead and try to turn ignition both ways just a bit. Sometimes those key cylinders dont go back into the open key position. Try that as you are moving the whhel as well. but my car does the same thing in the cold, and a screw driver seems to do it every time. Good luck let me know how you make out. PS Im guessing that ther is not something stuck inside ignition?? Good luck

Sounds like the ignition switch is worn out(or the linkage from the lock cylinder to the switch has come loose or something like that)

if your car is equipped with VATS this may be your problem. VATS is Vehicle Anti Theft System. A GM security system designed to make your car theft proof. Problem is the little black tab on your key that basically sends a signal to your motor to tell it it is the right key, wears out from everyday use, getting scratched, etc. Also the wiring used in the ignition wasnt always the best either and the wires sometimes became weak. If you have a good spare key, try using that one. If not, ask the dealer how much for a new key. I think they are costly. Hope it helps, good luck

It is known for ignition switches to fail. Sometimes they won't turn, other times they leave the starter engaged and sometimes the radio, A/C or wipers won't work. You may crank the car to start sometimes and the key does not spring back from crank to run. Check this first. Good luck....
