THESE ARE THE CONCERNS AND MOSTLY CAUSED BY NON FL820 OIL FILTER AND PROPER OIL 5/20. THESE TRUCKS ARE VERY SENSATIVE TO AFTERMARKET OIL FILTERS,AFTERMARKET OILFILTERS PLUG OIL GALLEY'S BECAUSE OF DETERIORATION. FL820 MOTORCRAFT FILTER ALSO HAS A ANTI DRAINBACK DIAPHRAM IN OIL FILTER TO KEEP OIL IN TOP END FOR COLD STARTS SO ENGINE WONT BE OILSTARVED ON CODSTARTS. PROBLEMS IT CAUSED IS CAM PHASERS,IF ENGINE CAN REV TO 2000RPM AND NOISE IS GONE IT'S CAM PHASERS. LASH ADJUSTERS ALSO GET DAMAGED AND CAN CAUSE A TICK NOISE LOUDER THAN INJECTORS. ENGINE IS NOT REALLY COMPROMISED AT THIS POINT BUT IT'S AN ANNOYANCE. IF WANT IT FIXED GO TO THE DEALER,THEY ARE WELL INFORMED WITH THIS CONCERN ON 5.4 3V. NOT TO CHANCE AFTERMARKET SHOP CHALLENGING THIS,PARTS FOR THESE ENGINES ARE BUILD DATE SPECIFIC AND DON'T WORK WELL WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS. SEE A VERY REPUTABLE DEALER FOR ANY CONCERNS PLEASE.

I would like to set the tappets sound like a diesel motor

Depending on the engine will determine if you can "adjust the tappets". Older cars had solid lifters so they had to be adjusted. Newer cars have hydraulic lifters and need no adjusting.

If your tappets sound like a "diesel motor" it may be they are not getting oil - or the center of the tube that provides oil to the tappets are blocked.

Need to remove the valve cover and run the engine just long enough to see if oil is coming out of the lifter. If when you remove the valve cover and the lifters look dry then you have a "lubricating problem" and you need to get it taken care of immediately.

Ticking noise in motor at first start up

what engine the V6
did you read the TSBs on chain noise of lifter noise.
how many miles on engine? 100k, 500K?
not changing oil frequently dooms most HLA lifters. they gum up and click (collapse)
same with chain
same with the tensioner,
a good tech, can find which part ticks with a $5 stethoscope.

I have a 100k on my 1992 wrangler i have a little lifter noise

If you have an inline 6, 100K is nothing! Lifter noise can be due to low oil pressure. if pressure is good, it can be from cam wear, lifter being sticky inside, or a rocker pivot being a little worn. Most just get a bit sticky (internal hydraulic plunger inside a lifter or two). To fix that I generally change the oil to a good synthetic, add lucas additive or marvel oil and just give it some time to dissolve the gunk. It took time to get that way so don't expect the tapping to go away instantly...Most times it will begin to lessen in a day or two or up to a few weeks.

Load ticking at start up and continues for a while on my 04 F150

If the ticking sound sounds like it is coming from the top of the engine them most likely one of the lifters is bleeding off while it is sitting. If the ticking goes away after a few minutes of operation then the lifter has pumped its self back up and is operating properly. There is not any damage you can do to the engine by not replacing the lifter at this point, just the annoying ticking sound when first starting. If at some point the ticking continues after running for a few minutes the lifter has malfunctioned and should be replaced. Just remember, if you replace one lifter you should replace all of them.

2000 olds van 3.4l engine started ticking Top end? Started suddenly last weekend. 220 000 klicks. timing belt slipped a tooth???

sounds to me maybe a sticky lifter and not building up with oil pressure, try adding 2 quarts of clean diesel fuel to your oil and let idle for about 10-15 minutes,if the ticking stops then change the oil and filter, then it was the lifter not building up with oil pressure

Lifter noise 04 f-150

Having just making a repair at Ford for the same sound. I have a 04 Lariat with a 5.4 3 valve, and the repair started at a cam phaser on the passenger side, at a cost of $1200.00 t0 $1500.00. Still having some lifter noise we then aggreed for a change out ot the driver side cam phaser, and found in addition to both cam phaser change out the cam and lifters on the driver bank had to be changed as the cam lobes had worn down. After the repair of approx $3k we ended up with another $600.00 for a bad injector in the 8 cylinder and a wire harness defect for the 6 cylinder, interestingly these were on the driver side. lots of luck to you it can be somwhat expensive once you sign on for the repair
