Question about 1988 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

I am having a problem with my 88 Buick LeSabre Limited. It has trouble code 41,which,if I did my research right, it is the ECM.The problem is there are 3 different problems that it could be,each for a different motor,I have the 3800 fuel injected motor, but I have heard that these Haynes Repair Manuals can sometimes be misleading and I was just looking for confimation.

That code 41 is for a cam sensor problem if the sensor out check to see if the magnet has come out of the camshaft pully because that will cause that code as well

Transmission fluid

When I changed the transmission oil on my 88 Buick lesabre limited I took 6 qts of Dextron VI, and it is also wise to change the transmission filter. U can purchase the transmission filter kit from any auto parts store, not neccessarily the dealer. This is the best change for the vehicle.

I have an 88 buick LeSabre/ vin "C"/ 3.8 with a trouble code 26. It only comes on going up hill

Hi! I have enclosed 3 trouble trees for you. The code being stored is a quad driver error. Quad(which means 4)drivers control up to 4 things. They are located in the engine control module. They provide ground for the items that they control. This could mean a component that the driver controls could be bad or the computer itself. Hope this helps you!deb334a.gif911608a.gif925db0e.gif

1989 lesabre engine codes

26 is a quad driver failure, 41 is a cam sensor failure. I can give you a test procedure for 26 but for 41 you likely need to replace the magnet that is in the cam gear for the cam sensor pick-up.

Check engine lights came on.

Yes an OBD 1 meter will give you a better idea as to what the problem is,however it would be more cost effective to find an OBD 2 meter with the capability to test OBD 1 cars.I do have the same problem with my 88 Lasabre, the 3 codes coming up would be the cam shaft sensor($20),the ignition mudule ($140),or the ECM ($80),I found that on mine the number 3 cylinder does not look like it is firing when I inspect the spark plug, but the only code I get # 41.I'am going to start with the cheapest part first. If you have a basic understanding of the mechanics of vehicles(or a haynes repair manual) you could probably replace this yourself. If you already found the solution to this problem please email me at mikehitchner@comcast.net so that I can fix mine. Thanks

Engine misses with code 41 and service engine soon light on

The code 41 is indicating an EST control issue. I would check you connection at the ignition module, make sure the connector is locked securely and there is no corrosion in the connector or terminal pins on the ignition module.
The EST is your electronic spark timing control, the module is not switching over to ECM controlled timing. The ECM sets the code when it can not take over control of the timing. If the connections look good, you likely have an ignition module that has gone bad.
Good luck and let me know.

Trouble Code 41 - indicates that the Camshaft Sensor is not functioning properly.

Possible Causes are: Loose cam sensor

Camshaft Interrupter Magnet
