97 gmc 2500 with 454 loses head lights and power steering when at slow speed it has a loose belt have been puting dressing on it

Check for if your belt is loose,that can cause to lose power performance ,Check also your transmission oil,If too low it can also lose power performance..Also check if you have an engine default code indicators appears on your instrument panel..in other words Check engine light....

97 geo tracker is not equipped with power steering. they where made so light that they just have steering assist which doesn't require power steering fluid or anything else. you will notice that when vehicle is parked or at slow speeds steering wheel is hard to turn. this is perfectly normal its just not power steering.

See if you have "variable assist power steering" with a malfunction. A solenoid may be mounted on the steering rack, provides less PS at higher speeds, full power steering capability at slow speeds or when stopped. Your belt is tight for the pump?

Does is sound when you idle or just when you steer ? If it happens when while idling, Then might be a a bad belt.

Your serpentine belt is slipping badly. When the engine speeds up, the accessories cannot be sped up due to insufficient belt friction, and the slip that takes place allows everything to slow down instead.

If both belts are the same age it wouldn't hurt to replace both of them, spray them with a belt dressing before installing new belts. You can get this dressing at Autozone and possibly the belts too. Good luck.

Sounds like a slick or worn serpentine belt or low level in the power steering pump. A bad belt will grab just enough at higher speeds not to impact the power steering or other accessories but not at lower speeds.

The Power Steering Belt tension requires adjustment, to give it more tension, to cure the slipping, resulting in the squealing, or perhaps renewal, due to cracking or excessive wear.

Your Power steering Belt, belt is your primary problem.

Sqealing belt is loose belt. Battery light on could mean loose or failing aternator for same reason. If belt isn't loose, use belt dressing. If this is helpful, please rate as such. TY
