There's something seriously wrong in the transfer case or controls. It seems the rear driveshaft is locked up, and the front wheels are driving. The driver's side rear tire is skidding because it's trying to turn backward - rear passenger rear tire is going forward and rear differential has no option but to turn the driver tire in reverse (driveshaft locked). DON'T TRY TO DRIVE IT. Get it checked out and fixed.
Check the grounds first. But it is probably the relay module . Located behind the passenger side rear tire. It has 4 plugs going to it. Also check those plugs for corrosion.
Timbo, Sounds like the right back brake hardware may be damaged or seizing. Take in for free inspection at some larger repair places. To show your appreciation press the helpful button and follow me on fixya for more tips and info.
I would probably start by removing the wheel and the drum and talking a peak. It should be pretty obvious.

Hi, Yes, this is normal while in four wheel drive on pavement. I will try and explain why. In four wheel drive the front and rear drive axles are linked together by a chain in the transfer case and gears in both axles. This is a direct link with very little play between the front and rear axles. When cornering a rear wheel will spin faster, or slower depending on the direction of the turn. this causes a binding in the drive line because the drive line wants all the wheels to turn at the same speed. So the wheel "skipping" going in reverse, is the drive lines way of compensating for the different speed of the wheels turning. Never should a four wheel drive be used on dry pavement. I could cause a break in one of the drive line components. On a slippery surface , snow, mud, gravel, grass, There is enough slippage in the surface to aloow the driveline to compensate for the different speeds of tire rotation. So do not try at highway speeds on dry pavement. Your four wheel drive system is working just fine. Wayne
hi this sounds like you might have rear brake drum internal problems, does the parking brake work ok? what might of happened is that one of the brake shoes inside the drum/disk might have thrown its covering and has gone around inside the drum and locked the wheel up like the parking brake is on there reallyisn't anything else to go wrong that would cause that, you will need to remove the rear disk/drum if you can, as it could really be any internal part broken like a spring or the self adjuster...hope this helps please vote
Based on another similar problem and it was fixed driving backwards, that's exactly what I did. I drove the Rodeo backwards and then would stop and put it in gear and did this for 10 minutes until I worked the 4x4 gear loose and now all four wheels run. I must say, I created quite a sight driving backwards in a Wal-Green's parking lot for 10 minutes.
Hi there , in order for your 4 wheel to work you have to drive a couple feet for everything to lock. If you are already stuck and you put it into 4 wheel, it won't engage. hope this helps you out
If the brake light and alb lights are on u need to get it checked out, as this is a warning of a brake problem, and u could find yourself w/out brakes. 1st check the easy things, is tire pressure what it should be in the rear tires? Low pressure on one side would result in the tire running hotter than the other properly inflated side. Is the emergency brake completely off? If on even slightly, it can turn on the brake light. Is brake fluid at the proper level? If low, the brake light will go on. If it's low, u must check for leaks to see why it's low. The abs light on indicates a problem w/ the system, it could be as simple as a broken wire at the rear wheels. u may also have a brake dragging on the rear pass. side, causing the brakes to overheat, which could result in heat transfer to the wheel, and then the tire. This can be checked by jacking up the vehicle (~if u have a sturdy enough jack), and with front wheels blocked front and back, in neutral, engine off, turn wheels in back, see if resistance to turning is the same, or if brakes are dragging, u should be able to tell. Let me know how u make out.
