Question about 1985 AMC American Motors Eagle
If you have the select drive 4X4 engagement option, check the vacuum lines at the manifold just under the carb and also where they meet at the firewall to connect with the select drive switch. Also check the vacuum lines on the transmission and also the transfer case. If any of these lines are loose, disconnected, leaking, or otherwise malfunctioning they can cause your four-wheel drive option to not work or work improperly. I hope this helps, these are some problems I've experienced with my own AMC Eagle
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

well you have several options you can go to a dealship and have them copy the diagram for you(i do this all the time) or you can purchase a repair manual at Napa or Oreilly's for around 20 bucks. it has diagrams and schematics in it. it also has alot of instructions in it so you can do repairs yourself. By the way i'm surprised that the mechanic doesn't have these diagrams himself. I was wandering why it won't start after you changed the plugs and wires could it be that maybe the firing order is wrong. i've done that myself a time or 2. double check the the plug wires to make sure they are in the right spot. if the problem is it won't crank. chances are you have a loose ground. please rate this..thanks

Check oil level, the motor has to run.
Could be the oil pump in the gearbox.
Or the link for the gear selector out of adjustment.
Maybe a gearbox oil filter.
