Question about 1995 Volvo 850

1 Answer

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT with about 200k miles on it. While driving to work the other day, several of the instrument panel lights came on at once, as the power steering went out. Fluid levels are fine. So are all the fuses.  The engine sounds fine from what I can tell, and having driven home that night, the alternator didn't give out. I just replaced the battery about a week ago. There have been a few electrical issues accruing over the last couple of years - the front seat heaters went out; the right turn signal goes out while I'm parking in reverse, or it blinks twice the normal rate while my foot's on the brake before a right turn. Could this power steering issue also be an electrical problem?

Power steering, and lamps in the instrument:

Your problem is mainly at the accessory belt, the one on the far right of the engine.
It might also be the guide roller placed behind the alternator that has "locked" its bearing.
Both are quite easy to change, even if the fitting of the guide-roller might be some tricky.

replace both belt and roller.

Note: the guide roller I talk about is NOT the one wich holds the tension to the accessories belt, but one that is mounted directly to the engine block.

Front seat heaters:

Under the seat is the themoswitch for the seat heaters. These are kept in place by a spring.
However, the connections to the thermoswitches is possible loose. I always replace the connectors, use a high-flexible cable (RK2,5mm) and then reconnects them to the cablegland under the seat.

The rest of the problems is often due to poor earthing. There is several connections made to the chassis of the car, and you should check those near te apparatus you are experiencing problems with. For the turnsignal, check the tail-lamp on the side you are having problem. Just take it out of the car, and clean it thouroghly with WD-40 or similar. Each bulb and socket.
(It is a good idea to replace all bulbs, even if they are in working condition at the same, cause they will fail soon).

Could be one or more earthing connections.

I have a 1994 volvo 850 GLT. Radio reset code

You will need to turn the ignition to the number 1 position and turn the radio on. It can take several hours, but the word code should come back on. When that happens, you will need to put the correct code in. If you don't have it, a Volvo dealer can give you the correct code from your VIN.

Installing drive belt

Hope this helps! If the belt seems too long for this configuration, some later models route differently to get more contact with the alternator pulley to reduce slippage:

Volvo 850 GLT's brakes??

if the pulsating in the steering occurs while braking this is an indications that the rotors are out of round and need to be turned or replaced. if they are causing a pulsating while driving without braking it could be the calipers sticking.

your back brakes will be cooler than the front brakes as the majority of braking is done ith the front brakes even on four wheel disc brakes. hope this helps.
