I disconnect the battery cable for about 15 minutes, then reconnect, start the car and I could drive all day without the check engine light coming on. However, if I turn off the engine and restart on it comes. I had it scanned and no codes came up. The car has 159,000 miles.

Hello. It seems your B.M.W.'s PCM (Powertrain Control Module), inadvertently, 'engaged' 4WD on it's own; without your knowledge. Disconnect your Beemer's battery and wait 10-15 minutes then reconnect it. Start engine and drive your Beemer somewhere. If it stays in 4WD, then, another 'reboot' has to be done. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.
Are you getting a check engine light when it doesn't start? Disconnecting and reconnecting the cable sounds like its clearing codes...until you drive and turn it off again?
The easiest way to reset a check engine light on almost any modern car is to disconnect the battery wait five minutes and connect it back up. This will not tell you why the check engine light came on. For that you need a ODBII scanner, but if the issue was a gas cap left off and you have fixed that, then check engine the light should go off. I have found that many auto parts stores will read your car's ODBII codes for free.
i would hook the tube back up, and then disconnect the positive battery cable for about 1 -2 minutes , then reconnect it, then start up engine, and the check engine light should have went out, also you will have to re set your radio, and clock functions, since cable was disconnected, hope that this has helped you.
activate the anti theft, with doors shut and locked, and the hood and trunk, wait about 1 minute, then disarm the anti theft, and try and start, see what happens, also,do not disconnect the battery, the computer can loose it`s memory.
I don't know why , but you can reset the check engine light by disconnecting the postive battery cable only and wait 10 - 15 minutes and then reconnect this will rest your light, if there is a real problem the light will come back on, otherwise it was just a minor emission problem and correct itself.
Hi,welcome to fix ya. there are 2 ways first you can just drive the car untill it checks again but this can take a long time. or you can have the light reset . Most large auto parts stores will do this for you for little or no charge.
