A pressure drop of as much as ten pounds is normal, depending on type of oil and ambient temperature. On all engines, it should not drop below 20psi at idle. If it does, either the pickup screen for the pump is plugged with carbon or you have worn engine bearings. People will vary on what they accept as "low" An engine can run with 5psi pressure, but will not last very long like that.

I generally don't do this But, Oil pumps do not fail unless they have become contaminated by engine debris (such as metal from a bearing failure) There are no gaskets in an oiling system (unless you count the O ring on the oil filter or the one on the filter mount on some engines.Oil is held in where it belongs by close tolerances between the bearings and components they serve. I am a big fan of synthetics, however most times when used they will show lowered oil pressure due to their low pour point.(not a problem in a tight engine) Before a bearing becomes noisy, the oil pressure begins to drop. This is the best time to catch a problem before the failure scores the crank or cam journals.(the worse it gets, the worse it gets) Especially in todays engines, crank pins are extremely thin (to save weight) once a bearing has failed that crank should be discarded. Always regard a pressure problem as serious 'till you can prove otherwise.

Hi I am Vortash sounds like you have one of four problems either the oil you are using is inferior and you need to upgrade to a better one synthetics are best ..
Your Oils pump is failing reducing the oil pressure ..
Leaky gaskets allowing pressure to ecape .
Or more drasticaly your main bearing shells are wearing giving the the oil more ways to escape under pressure . this is usually discernable by a knocking or rumbling noise especially on tick over .. hope it is just the oil for your sake regards Vortash

Hi Vortash here again .. The gaskets I was reffering to are Sump gasket .. Rocker cover gasket , Main bearing end seals , oil filter O' ring , and even the Cylinder head gasket can cause loss of oil wih no decernable performance loss , however you would have considerable oil spillage evidence on or around the enginge , all these can cause pressure drop as the oil is lost .

    regards Vortash

Normal is 10w30.
If the oil pressure gauge is correct, my guess would be worn engine bearings and / or oil pump.

Oil pressure drops when i stop

If you have a high milage motor you could benifit from a higher viscosity oil.
Low oil pressure is usuall a sign of worn engine bearings, worn pump or a clogged oil screen on the pump pick up.

1992 mazda navajo oil gauge bounces

Could be a faulty oil pressure sender switch ( quite a common fault ) . Remove it and fit a mechanical gauge to test.
Much less likely ( if the test shows fluctuating pressure) the oil pressure bypass valve may be sticking. Make sure your oil is nice and clean, contaminants can sludge up the oilways. The bypass valve is usually in or near the oil pump on most cars.
My pick would be the switch.
Happy hunting!!

This could be a number of things but i think that your problem sounds like a vacuum leak or an EGR problem. Try listening for leaks and try un-plugging the EGR solenoid valve one time.
