Whether it's an engine oil pan (called the 'sump'' in the UK) or a transmission oil pan the principle is the same on all vehicles.
1. Drain the oil

2. Remove the bolts holding the sump/pan in place:

The oil drain plug, though depending on your vehicle it may look different:

Use a blunt screwdriver -if needed - and prise the oil pan free. remove all traces of the old gasket from the mating surfaces.

Use a smear of sealant to hold the new gasket in the correct position on the pan - this will hold it in place when you refit the pan.

Push the pan into position and put in a front bolt finger-tight. Then put in a rear bolt finger-tight.

Putting in the bolts finger-tight allows you to gently 'move' the pan if needed to put the bolts in one at a time.

When all bolts are in, tighten them with a wrench/socket. Then check them all again for tightness.

It isn't actually a big job .. more 'messy' because of the oil.

Carl, since you've not told us what make/model/year/engine you're working on, all I can offer you is pretty generic advice:
1. Remove oil pan.
2. Clean old gasket from engine block and old pan.
3. Apply gasket sealing compound to oil pan.
4. Set gasket on oil pan
5. Apply gasket sealing compound to top of gasket
5. Attach oil pan to engine.

Changing a oil pan for a 95 grand marquis

Just loosen oil plug and drain...take out pan bolts... drop down...make sure alt gasket material is off of both pan and bottom of motor. Lay new gasket on oil pan...possibly use gasket sealer to keep gasket in place...a very thin layer on oil pan then put gasket on. Let dry for a bit then bolt back up...make sure oil plug is back in then refill....cheers!

How do you change a gasket on the oil pan I have a 99 Chevy Cavalier

Drain the oil and remove the screws/bolts that hold the pan into place.

Then use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently prise the pan free.

Clean both mating surfaces of pan and block - remove all traces of the old gasket.

Smear some sealant compound on the oil pan - this will hold the new gasket in place. Put the new gasket onto the oil pan and align the bolt holes. Lift the pan into place and tighten the bolts.

The photo below is a generic image of oil pan with gasket.
