Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix
My ignition switch was giving me issues when I would shut off my car...for several months the keys would get stuck and I would have to move the steering wheel or the gear shifter really hard to get the keys out. Now, I put the key in the ignition and it will not move or start at all...like it is locked or something. The steering wheel won't move and I used to be able to shist my car even when it was off and I cannot do that now either. Any suggestions for a single mom? Thanks!

SOURCE: Shifter Button Stuck
I had that same problem. There is a gear shift lock button to the right of the gear shifter that has to be pressed down before you can unlock the gear shifter and the key.

Possibly shift interlock problem check the btsi fuse in the instrument fuse panel. There is a shift lock actuator in the column or center console that could be your culprit depending on if you have a column or floor shifter.

This situation is called "Torque Lock". The Solution is simply to Turn the Steering Wheel Slightly in the Opposite Direction to remove Pressure on the Steering Lock Pawl. Usually this occurs when turning off the Key while Pressure is Applied to the Steering Wheel from a slight "Roll-Back" or from the Power Steering being forced all the way to it's limit in one direction or the other. Always be sure that the Steering is allowed to relax prior to switching the Ignition Switch to the Locked Position. This is a very common problem most frequently experienced by women rather than men. Let me know if this helps!
